Read about this on BoingBoing.net and thought it would be a cool way to spend some time:

(Thread moved from Autism discussion to Random)

I've seen some inner city concrete jungles on TV that have been transformed by people doing this.

Really good idea.

I love the vending machine!

I've been doing this redneck style for years though... tossing seeds of useful weed plants into vacant areas usually just before or just after a rain. Nature isn't as picky as you might think. Just forgo mowing a lawn for a month and you will witness natural meadow restoration in progress.

I have this 'discussion' with my wife about drought resistant plants here in Arizona. My point is that when I look at the vacant lots I see a lot of plants that do well without any sort of regular watering so why not use them and groom them well.

Apparently there is some distinction between weed and plant I am not aware of.

Weed is just an under appreciated plant whose charm has yet to be discovered.

Here's a link to drought tolerate plants for you to consider though :) ... Arizona Xeriscaping Plant Lists

off topic, but quite interesting: isn't it funny how dock leaves always grow right beside nettles?

I love guerrilla gardening! Super fun. :flower:
Easy to do with the right plants. I've done it in parks, empty urban planters, in neighborhood... wherever.
Some of my favorites for seed/plant bombing:

Bryophyllum diagremontianum (mother of thousands)
This plant will grow anywhere and completely take over. One of the most invasive plants I know about (which of course must be treated with caution). Thrives on total neglect.

Cosmos sulphureus (orange cosmos)
Re-seeds itself everywhere and grows like a weed.

Gaillardia pulchella (blanketflower)
It, uh... makes blankets of flowers

I like seed bombing, guerilla gardening in general, including moss graffiti -

Urban knitting is cool too, we have little need for guerilla gardening in Newcastle city centre, but the odd bit of urban knitting is sort of cool. Anything that brings a little interest and magic to the world is to be loved ~ stealing your thread a second here, excuse me ~ like QR code games, found playing cards, urban Space Invader's, or vampire rabbits during the light festival to find - not quite the same as grass-roots...erm...well, grass and wildflower bombs, but still cool little things that make living in urban areas great :)

I love this idea! There's a field across the street from me where nothing but buttercups grow. I'd do it late at night with a slingshot and wait for a patch of another color besides yellow blooms in a spot here and there.

never seed bomb with morning glories. they will flat take over in no time.

I actaully like dandilions....makes great jelly...mmmmm.

what about planting bulbs in urban desolate areas....bulbs are really tough and have the most beautiful flowers...once or twice a year
a whole patch of white bearded irises are sooo beautiful.

it would be a great suprise to have these gorgious flowers pop up out of nowhere every spring and fall.

I guess you would call that bulb mines. :D

ohh to those who dont know...seed bombing is taking a ball of seeds and throwing it in some location and letting nature do the rest.
