This is a slightly confusing sentence; was your German grandparent a German Jew?
This is slightly confusing how he phrased it, but there are German Jews.
Albert Einstein perhaps?
No, I know there are German Jews...
I was asking if his grandparent was a German Jew, not just a German.
Your wondering if he has a preconception that all Germans are in fact Jews? But the likely choice is that his family comes from german jews, so he knows his cousins ancestors are also german jews. Then again he may have not taken into account that his cousin's second parent (not related to him) may have been german but not jewish. So if he thinks his cousin is 50% german jew, she may in fact just be - still 25% jewish, although 50% german.
