It looks quite Clematis-like.

Was it attached or lying on the ground ? Clematis is a climber so if you found it attached to a short plant it can't be that.

looks like a rosa omeiensis.

I want to agree with those who've said it is a Clematis. Everything seems to look like a Clematis except for the anthers of the flower. Moog's flower seems to have anthers that look fuzzier, more like a rose. So I don't know.

Moog, if you could tell us more about the plant it came from, or what the leaves of the plant look like, that would be helpful :)

Hey! I think we have a winner. I should have photographed the leaves and stems and branches too but didn't. I think the leaves were smoothly oval with a point and unlobed, like in this pic. I can go look again next week.

I reckon it's Philadelphus (Mock orange). It's about the nicest smelling thing around at this time of year.
