***Sorry about providing only 3 options for the poll. There were more when I submitted the post, but they didn't take for some reason, and I don't know how to edit a poll***

Have you ever traveled by train? Where did you go? Did you enjoy it? If so, what did you like about it?

I once took the Sunset Limited from Florida to California, and then the Coast Starlight from California to Washington state. It took 5 days. My seat was in coach, but I spent most of my time in the observation car, taking in the ever-changing terrain. I had never been out west. I enjoyed the Coast Starlight the most, riding along the California and Oregon coast, seeing mountains on one side of the train, and the Pacific ocean on the other side, and then riding through the Cascade Mountains (seeing snow for the first time).

Some things I liked about it:

* the sound of the train
* the motion of the train, especially after I got used to walking between cars
* being able to enjoy the scenery and not having to drive (relaxing instead of stressful and tiring)
* being able to socialize with people in the observation car, but go back to my seat and be left alone any time I wanted
* quiet with most people sleeping, reading, or listening to music
* meeting a few people who were interesting in a quirky kind of way

Heck, yes! I've always loved trains! It is the one loud thing in this world that NEVER bothers me! :D

Earlier this year I took Amtrak on the Lake Shore Limited from Michigan to visit a friend in New York City. I really enjoyed it much more then flying.

I brought a book, my music, and my laptop/aircard/gps. I also really enjoyed the availability of the Lounge car tables and eating meals in the Diner car. Also of course it was pleasant not having to drive and just take in the scenery.

Apart from city commuter trains I've only been on a domestic travel train once when I was about 11 years old. We caught the train to Sydney.

I've been to the station plenty of times to farewell family, and I always like staying till the train leaves and feel and hear it whoosh past as it picks up speed. I love the XPT.

In the UK it's a standard form of transport for many people.I much prefer travelling by train than by car or bus.I live in an urban area but luckily it's only a 20 minute train ride from rolling hills or the seaside. The furthest I've travelled south is to Bath in England and north is to Inverness, which took me through some spectacular mountain scenery.

I find the motion of the train is steady and reassuring and I like the freedom of being able to either look out the window or read something, instead of having to focus on driving.

I go every other week to see rabbitears when he's not travelling up my way. I like the train because it gets me to places quicker than cars and buses and the timing is excellent and delays rare. I much prefer the motion of a car and I only like the motion of the train when sitting facing the back so I'm moving backwards.

I answered that I have travelled by train and normally enjoy it, which indeed is mostly the case, except for when I travelled on trains in the US.

I'd love to do that journey, but I have a problem with keeping still. I can sit in a chair all day long of my own volition if have something to do. But being told 'this is your seat' or being expected to sit in one place surrounded by strangers for hours on end is something I can't cope with. I also have a problem with people sitting behind me. I have no idea where that comes from. I hate it. Unless I can get a seat at the back of a bus or a train compartment, I won't travel.

I have been asked if I'd like to visit American relatives in San Jose (well, Los Gatos) or Canadian relatives in Mississauga, but that would mean sitting in a seat - buckled in - for hours on end with little or no option to get up and move around. That would take me weeks to prepare for and I'd probably just frighten myself enough to cancel.

I have traveled by train on many occasions, but can't answer the poll because I've had both pleasant and unpleasant experiences.

I have a phobia of travelling on trains... I avoid long journeys by train if possible... I prefer flying to train journeying..

I don't get the train much very often but I used to when I lived somewhere else, the cheapest way to get into town was by the train, if I remember correctly it was only £1.70 for a child's return ticket and the bus was £2.50. But that was about five years ago now.
The furthest I've been on the train was up to London with my family and that only took about 45 minutes. It was so fun though, it was definitely a part of the day out. Then we used the tube to get around it was great fun, it was only the second time I'd been to London so it was a big adventure :)

I think you need another option; "travelled by train; neutral". I travel by train all the time. I don't love it, I don't hate it, I couldn't really care less. The furthest I've travelled by train is London to the top of Scotland. I think.

I like trains. I enjoy watching out of the window, reading, sleeping, listening to my music and etc. The sound that train makes and the motion are kinda calming. The longest I've traveled on a train was 8 hours. I think I could do longer than that if I needed to.
