I read this sign outside my local church today. I have been hearing statements like this for years.
"You don't need money to be happy." etc etc

Look, maybe i am very cynical but i just cannot agree with these type of statements. For a start off, I struggle to find anything that money won't buy.

Love? How many homeless people do you reckon have love? Very few i would imagine. Because in order to be loved you generally need the things and/or the circumstances to put you in a position to be loved. Without money you cannot have those things/circumstances

Kids? If you don't have money to support and look after your children, they will be removed from your custody by the state.

Intelligence? Only worthwhile if you have the resources to utilise that intelligence eg: training to get a job, clothing to make an impression. Resources cost money

Health? I would be healthier if I could afford organic food. If I could afford to have a nutritionist prepare menu plans, a fitness plan etc. it is a rare person that never suffers any health problems and at some stage money is going to be necessary to fund a health issue.

The longer I am around, the more difficult i find to maintain the financial obligations that is required to maintain just a normal standard of living. and i know many others whom are affected like this. I know this sounds harsh, but in my opinion love, kids, health and intelligence are worthless if you haven't got the money to support, nurture and develop these things.

Ha ! I am not shallow. Just realistic that money makes the world go around. Incidentally I don't agree with that. I wish it were more about the values and people. But the truth is (and I see it all the time in the business world) that people are discriminated and rejected because of their background, disabilities, nationality etc.
And our whole society is centred around people who have money. The cost of living has skyrocketed to the point where even a reasonable wage is not enough to support a family. I was appalled when I actually sat down the other day and worked out how much it costs me to run the household (and I wasn't even taking into account the mortgage which is actually quite low compared to others).

Most normal people in our society are up to their eyeballs in debt trying to look like they have money. It's stupid. The US gov't is on it's way to bankruptcy and the people in the know won't/can't do anything about. There are lot's of unhappy people who make lot's of money. Look at all the superstar druggies.

To me I'd define rich as the quality of life you experience.. Many people can have a rich life living ordinary, it's the state of mind. If you're naturalistic and enjoy nature and indulge in that and it makes you happy, you can say you're rich in that sense.. some people would define materialism as the definition of richness. It's up to the individual

It's been said that a wealthy man without love is just a poor man with lots of money.

It's also been said: "Love me ... hate me ... whatever ... I'm the guy with the money."

Wealth won't necessarily bring happiness, but he who dies with the most toys wins. So at least you get to win if you have money.

And poverty sucks. And it's hard to dig out of once you're there because of some predatory practices that profit off of keeping the poor poor.

If you tell me that money isn't important I would tell you to go sit your romantic ass down under a rainbow and write a poem. Then I would realize that was an insensitive thing to say because you may not be able to afford a piece of paper and a utensil for writing that poem.

I want to be wealthy enough to not care whether or not anyone likes me.
