Each pack has a leading, dominate pair, The top male, called the alpha male, who submits to no one and to whom all the other males defer. Likewise, a top alpha female,to whom all other females must submit (The subservient members are usually direct descendants of the Alpha parents).

Contrary to popular belief a female can lead the pack, in one study of 5 packs almost 50% were lead by a female wolf

Next in rank to the alphas are the beta male and beta female. For each gender, every wolf has a rank or place in line where they must submit to anyone higher than they are, but can bully or dominate the wolves lower in rank. At the bottom there is an omega male and omega female.

The rare exception is the proverbial "lone wolf" - the runt, the outsider, ostracized from the pack.

erm... by "almost 50%" do they mean 40% Since it was 5 packs, it has to be 40% or 60%, i.e. either 2 packs or 3 packs. Oh well, statistics can be used to prove anything, 45% of people know that.

(Note: this is not an attack on female leadership)

Anyway in answer to the question, I am not sure. I can operate as a lone, but I do have a "pack". Within my pack, its difficult to tell. Since we don't bully each other, its hard to define who is the alpha etc.

Somtimes people listen more when certain people speak. On that basis I am an alpha, but then there are several other alphas, so maybe we are all betas.

The actual stuff about wolfs is probably fine (though not being a wolf expert I don't know for sure).

I was just mocking the statistics in it... they said "almost 50%" but because they also said the number of packs they looked at, we can know that it was either 40% or 60%. So it is a silly attempt at rephrasing the statistics to make it convince us of their point.

Anyway I like the question. It often helps me to understand humans by thinking of their behaviours in terms of animal instincts.

In most social situations, I tend to be either the lone wolf, or to defer to others - so, omega. In my family, I'm slightly dominant, but for the most part I'm about equal with everyone else - so, it's harder to tell. Possibly nearest to being a beta.

Two lone wolves can start their own pack, raise bloodthirsty pups, and take revenge on the packs that shunned them!! 8)

Ocean Going Dingo. If anyone else wants to come with me that's fine but I'm not leading and I'm not following.
