Having a friend/family member commit suicide, be murdered, or die of cancer?

I would say suicide personally. though murder is a close second.

I would say suicide, especially if you're the parent of someone who's committed suicide. You'll probably constantly be thinking, "What did I do wrong?" or "How could I not have noticed anything?"

They're all about the same ... they just hurt in different ways.

I suppose with cancer you have time to prepare, but otherwise it's all the same

This is a cheery subject.

Cancer, suicide, murder - in that order.

Cancer is slow and all you can do is watch, you see the person suffer and towards the end there's nothing left of them.

Suicide, it's a choice they make, once they've gone that far into the darkness they rarely come back, and suicide at least gives peace from whatever hell they were struggling to live through. Although if it's not quick, such as with paracetamol toxicity, it's tragic.

Murder you wonder what-if but have someone to blame, it's quick and out of your hands.

A family member committing suicide would be the hardest for me to recover from.

Geeeeez what a topic. It seriously has my eyelid twitching. I can't choose because I don't want to :? . But---very interesting thread. They would all be hard to endure.

I am thinking of the situation where a mother begins arguing and arguing and arguing with her son because he missed a day of school (even though he had perfect attendance the year before). He gets madder as she gets madder. His hormones go into overdrive and he melts down. The mother calls the Sheriff. He flees in her car although he has never driven before. The police chase him 25 miles. Then, after he wrecks and panics and begins shooting a gun at the police, they shoot him in the neck and kill him. I wonder how the mother now feels when the police tell her they shot and killed her 14 year old son. Hmmm...it all began with a silly argument with missing one day of school. Now he will miss everyday of school.

suicide, cancer, murder

Understanding the reasons behind suicide helps and may bump it lower than cancer.

I choose cancer. Out of all the possible ways for my loved ones to die, I am most afraid of them getting cancer. I watched my grandma have to be treated for cancer when I was a child (even though she survived and actually wound up dying of other causes). It is a slow and painful death, with loads of chemotherapy/radiation that makes them ill, surgeries, seeing them be hooked up to machines while they're in the hospital, amongst other horrible things. You just feel so helpless as you watch them suffer.

With suicide or murder, there's always the chance that it was quick and painless. But cancer is never quick and painless.

Suicide would be second because you wonder if there was some way you could have prevented it, and your heart aches for them knowing that they suffered so much in life. But I understand why someone would commit suicide because I have been driven to that point a few times myself. If someone I knew committed suicide, I would empathize with them more than anything, I think.

Murder would be the lesser of the three evils because there's always someone to blame for it, and if that person gets brought to justice, it can bring closure. A lot of courts let the families make statements to the murderer if they get a guilty verdict. I imagine that that would also help bring closure.

I would say suicide unless the murder was committed by another family member

My cousin was murdered by a gang. He was an innocent, waiting for a taxi, after a night out with his girlfriend and another 2 couples. This has got to be the worst thing that's happened to our family. The gang were caught, but only one got any time in prison and he's been out for a long time now. It happened 24 years ago and I still cry about it from time to time. I know someone whose sister is dying of cancer just now. I don't think he's near as traumatised as my aunt and uncle were when their son was murdered. I know a couple of people who had loved ones who committed suicide. One was depressed and it was a shock but not too unexpected, but his sister is still troubled by it, 5 years on. The other one was completely out of the blue and the family have no idea why she did it. That must be awful for them.

The question is meaningless. You are assuming all suicides, all murders and all deaths by cancer are similar enough to treat together as groups, which is absurd.

Murder would anger me. Suicide has a responsibility component and can be merciful in my opinion. Cancer can be torturous for the victim and is only one that could through genetics or sharing the same environment directly afflict you.

I would go cancer, murder then suicide, though I might have a different opinion if thought about it more deeply.

Murder & Suicide tied. Cancer is easier for me because you usually know ahead of time that that person has little time left.

I voted for suicide because I would feel guilty; like I should of been aware of things & done something to help; feel like I failed em
