I went to throw my ice cream bowl into the sink and saw a HUGE roach! It ran under the bed! Now I hate to go to sleep knowing there's a roach under my bed!! ! Any tips to get rid of them besides seek them out under the bed/behind a dresser etc. and squach them? If you can't get to them is that bad?? I HATE knowing they are around!! !! I am in FL though a tropical climate so we do have them usually outside I HATE having them INSIDE! But my room was a garage made into a room and my window has alot of bushes out but of course it's closed. I thought "trash" may be of concern I saw one about 1 week ago by my over flowing trash can and again near my ice cream bowl perhaps I need to keep my trash picked up. I think I need to get a bottle of bug spray on stand by! OMG! I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN GO TO SLEEP NOW KNOWING THERE'S A ROACH UNDER MY BED!

Roaches typically inhabit tropical areas, so if you live in places like Hawaii or southern Florida it isn't uncommon to see them. Just call an exterminator that uses safe chemicals. It's also fun to spray them with hairspray. :)

Haha I feel your pain, living in NYC I deal with a million roaches.
Just buy one of those fogger things. They work, close all the doors, turn it on, leave, and come back a few hours later.

Or another one is just spray Raid under your bed or wherever you saw it. And in all the corners and along the edges of your room.

And cockroach motels work, get some of those. =)

But yes, if there is trash around they will be there. Just get one of those trash cans that seal closed, and make sure it is never left open.

Buy powdered boric acid at a pharmacy or grocery store.

If you live in a ground floor apartment or house squirt the dust into the corner where the outside of the building meets the ground.

Unscrew the covers of your electrical outlets and squirt the dust into the walls.

If there are any other holes in your walls squirt the dust into them and cover the holes.

Insects tend to nest in areas around water, like in bathrooms and kitchens, so make sure you don't leave any water in sinks, cups or bowls.

They are also attracted to food. Make sure that there isn't any food sitting out in your home. If you have any food like flour, cereal, or pasta that is often kept in open containers or in paper containers, it's best to put it in a sealed plastic jar. Foods like bread that are stored in plastic bags should be put in the refrigerator and will last longer in the refrigerator, too. Dishes should be washed immediately after use or at least rinsed thoroughly and then drained, and food waste should be disposed of outside your home instead of in your garbage.

One thing I've learned living in a rochalopolis in Las Vegas for a year and a half is that the primary reason roaches are in your apartment is because they think they can find food. Do you ever eat in bed? The best way to get rid of them is to make your apartment as clean as possible, and make sure you never leave food out. Clean your dishes as soon as you're done with them, and make a point to change the filters on your stove. There's another place you might not have thought of. How old is your garbage disposal? I used to keep my apartment spotless. Like you could virtually perform open heart surgery on my counter clean. And still every time I turned the lights on there were dozens of roaches running around. Then my garbage disposal died and was replaced. In less than a month the roaches were gone. They'd realized there wasn't any food to be had and they moved to another unit in my complex. Anyway, I hope this helps. Remember that they can't hurt you. They're just gross.

I have been FREAKED out about this all my life:

Make sure your house is clean of food
Don't leave food out
Don't leave water out
Leave roach baits out
Poison works if you are allowed
Oh, and look for holes underneath your bed....you are supposed to follow them from whence they came because they might have a nest somewhere underneath there.

I leave food out all the time and I haven't seen a roach since the terminator guy sprayed inside the house.

In one case my garbage WAS overflowing with candy wrappers I just hadn't thrown away the garbage yet. I could hear the wings flutter!! ! As an Aspie I'm hypersensitive to noise so can hear the buzz or wing flutter of an insect it drives ME CRAZY! Yesterday I had ate ice cream and left my bowl on the table (for a few hours) I was going to take it to the sink (in the kitchen) then WHAM! Saw it in the floor it scared me I said s**t! and decided to sleep on the couch! My parents view is OMG! it's a bug but not to me! Thanks for the food tip! I'll try to keep my room cleaner and take out the trash and put away dirty bowls RIGHT AFTER eating and not wait! :-)
