Is it me or does foie gras and everything related to it smell like absolute hypocrisy & tastelessness?

I'm thinking this s**t is even more evil than Mcdonalds. Can't be right?

Never had it, but it looks like one of those nasty foods that rich people eat, not because it tastes good but because some snobby aristocrat decided a few hundred years ago that it was fancy.

There's a great scene in American Psycho (the book) where Patrick Bateman takes a urinal cake from a public restroom, coats it in chocolate, and presents it to his girlfriend. She eats it and clearly finds it disgusting, but she pretends to like it because it's fancy rich people food, and you should pretend to enjoy it no matter how awful it is.

I mean, some "gourmet" food is just gross as hell. Nobody would be eating caviar if it were available at McDonald's.

Besides which, it kinda sucks. One of those foods that's mostly eaten so that one can say "hey, look what I can afford!" Which is funny because it's not that expensive anymore. Perceptions just haven't caught up.

I've no problem with eating meat. We are omnivores, the human digestive system is designed to process meat. to not eat it is against our nature. But we have something other meat-eaters do not; the ability to empathize. I believe this gives us a responsibility to ensure that the lives of the animals we eat are as pleasant as possible, and their deaths as quick and painless as possible.

Torturing birds by force-feeding them, just so we can eat their liver extra fatty, doesn't really mesh with that.

To me it sounds like it would be delicious but very cruel. I doubt I'd ever eat it because I rarely eat out in restaurants and the rare times I do it's a buffet.

I looked it up and it's not but I kind of thought it was already illegal in my state.

Edit: I was going to try to watch a video about it but I couldn't even get past them dumping a carton of live babies in a bag.

I quite like it. It's like a poncy, rich paté. The one I had was quite nice, but I'd like to have more expensive ones. I don't know good brands though. I'd probably have to go along to France to have a look.

Never had it. No interest in eating it.

If I'm going to pay a lot of money for meat, I'd rather buy some nice venison.

On the rare occasion that I have had it, I liked caviar, goes great with tabouli.

I've never had it before.

Just get some decent paté instead and you're set.

It's possible to get it without the torturing and force-feeding, but unfortunately it takes more special attention to the habits of the bird and the timing of the slaughter than most farmers are willing or able to do. There might be a few small-scale farmers who sell fois gras raised that way.

To get humane fois gras: watch the birds closely during the fall. Their instincts will drive them to fatten up for winter. If harvested at just the right time, the liver (and the layer under their skin) will be just as fatty as if they'd been force-fed, but they'll have done it voluntarily.

I've had it and it's pretty good, but I wouldn't pay a lot of money for it, there are plenty of cheap things I like just as well as that, like fried bologna, really.

My husband has a thing against veal and won't eat it if he knows it's veal. I usually always use veal in meatballs, so he eats it a lot, and he knows I buy it, but just doesn't want to know when he's eating it. The kids on the other hand, have no problem with it.

As for caviar, it's got a good taste, but I can't deal with the texture.

I eat for taste and not for politics, so I only base my food on how well I like it.

Why is McDonalds evil? Because they use mass produced meat? I know that the brain inside my pointy little face (not your words, someone elses about something inane) doesn't see food animals as pets, and therefore I don't really care about their living conditions, but I seriously don't get why you think McDonalds is evil. Is Burger King evil too? What about Hardees? What about the hamburger meat you buy at the grocery store?

If it's all that evil, why do you even eat meat or allow it to be sold or produced in the same universe you live in?

If mass produced meat is really so bad, why not talk to the Taliban and Al Queda and get them to redirect their attentions toward non Vegan people?

I mean if you really think it's evil, you'd do something about it, right? Not just peacefully refuse to eat it.

McDonald's are evil because they're drug pushers.

Fois gras is commonly eaten here in France; I've never tried it due to the cruel way the animals are force fed with funnels rammed down their throats to cram down vast amounts of corn. Animal rights have a good way to go here. Not quite as bad as Spain though where they throw spears at bulls for "fun".

I always want to pronounce it "foy grass" even though I know it is probably something like "foy-e graah"

More like "Fwaugh grah"
