Not once. It doesn't happen. Old age doesn't kill. Diseases occurring in old age do.

Or simply cardiac arrest or organ failure caused by normal wear and tear and deterioration of the heart or other organs.

Actually, everyone on the planet dies from cardiorespiratory arrest. No matter what disease or trauma it is caused by, what causes death is your heart stopping and your lungs stopping.

Old age is just a term used to explain natural causes when the person wasn't sick and there was no disease or anomoly on autopsy. Then the cause of death is usually called cardiorespiratory arrest. If there was some undiagnosed problem, they may add "secondary to <problem>"

True, "old age" is never listed as the cause on death certificates.

So a guy who has his brain blown to bits from a gunshot dies because from cardiorespiratory arrest? He's dead before his lungs and heart even get the news.

People die of whatever the coroner says they died of.

It's true, but my great-grandmother had not one illness or suspicious thing wrong with her at all when her heart stopped likely DUE to old age. She did not have a disease of any kind, and she died in her sleep when her heart simply stopped beating.

Old age is the disease. Death is the cure.

Yes, Mannyboo, aging is a curse and disease, and the only known cure is death!

Seriously though, what of the fountain of youth?

You aren't killed by heart/lungs stopping if your head gets chopped off.

You die from getting your head chopped off.

Morbid much?

Actually, this whole thread is. And I'll go ahead and add to it by saying any kind of fatal trauma to the head affects the cause of death. The heart and lungs may be perfectly fine otherwise.

What about when a person receives a "Massive Head Injury", and there is simply not enough of the brain left intact to make keeping the rest of the body functioning worthwhile?

I once said that everyone dies of anoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain), but when a person's brain is splattered all over the surrounding area, each neuron may have direct exposure to sufficient oxygen, so my statement was rendered invalid.

If you accept that death occurs at the moment that the irreversible end of all brain activity occurs ("Brain Death"), then we all eventually die of necrosis of the neurons following the removal of nourishment or oxygen from the brain, the introduction of poison to the brain, or the forced removal of the brain from its nourishing and protective environment.

Well we are always dying and being regenerated throughout our lives, in our physical cells, our mental states... So i have already died several times and been reborn several times, in continuing mini deaths and mini rebirths, throughout my entire life.

The fountain of youth is already here. Its just that as you age, the the death moments begin to outnumber the rebirth moments, until death becomes the overwhelming stage of the current incarnation.

Yes. And if you are on life support, the machine is making your lungs breathe and your heart beat. Which is why it's brain stem death that kills people in that situation when they are taken off. It's the brain that controls the heart and everything else. So technically you could say it's when the brain stops working or stops being able to control or regulate whichever bodily function it is that has failed.

Then of course, you could be really philosophical and say that OP's title statement is true - because no-one ever truly dies anyway (even though their physical body does). Whether that be by way of transformation of energy of their body or by way of a spiritual afterlife. When your body decays the elements it contains either sink into the ground and act as fertiliser, are eaten by insects and used as fuel by them or burned and turned into heat and carbon energy.

This is too gross. I'm off to cheerier threads!
