So this past week i had a checkup with the dermatologist. The intake nurse asked me a series of obligatory questions pertaining to my skin. One of the questions was "do i have tattoos?". I said "no". Then the nurse paused for a second and replied with a " thats weird". I knew what she was implying... She then said "almost every one has some sort of tattoo now, it's so stupid".

I find it funny how many people i meet with tattoos think their being counter culture of some sort by having tattoos.

But how can something be counter culture if everyones doing it...
Police officers now have half sleeves of tattoos.
Are the police not a symbol of conformity anymore?

Anyway , My next question is ... Are people that oblivious ?...

It's neither counter colture nor conformity, it's just a form of self expression. Now for some it could be conformity, not sure.

Not everyone gets a tattoo to go against the perceived grain.

It seems to have become a sort of rite of passage. I noticed that as soon as my high school classmates turned eighteen or graduated, they were in a mad rush to get a tattoo.

I, myself, have two tattoos, but I'm starting to see how common they really are. These days, actually not having a tattoo would be going against the norm.

When I was in my 20s I got four arm tattoos, which made me feel very wicked for a few weeks and condemned me to wearing long sleeves (in Florida!) because they were not then acceptable in most venues. I never actually regretted them, but they were in no way as much fun as I anticipated.

However, now that they can be worn openly pretty much anyplace by anyone, I see their value for people who feel their bodies need a little distinction. It's important to spend some money and ensure that they are well done and true physical enhancements, because their shock value is nil these days.

I think it would be neat to have a tattoo of the 1965 Kinks logo, than again my body is my temple, so I won't do that.

Getting a tattoo just because you're expected to is lame. Someone thinking you're lame just because you don't have a tattoo is lame. Getting a tattoo because you want it and no other reason is not lame.

I absolutely hate tattoos for so many reasons. They make me cringe in frustration.

People nowadays think they can just be removed, too. It isn't that simple, and it costs a lot of money, as well.

I absolutely hate tattoos. They disgust me. I don't care if it is a gorgeous picture (ie. something that would be beautiful if it was a painting); if it is permanently put into a person's skin, it is ugly to me. I cannot even touch tattooed skin, the thought of it just grosses me out. I never think they are tasteful or attractive. If people show me their tattoos--for some reason they think everyone is going to be just as proud of them as they are--I just say something like "oh" or even "I don't like tattoos". I just can't stand them. :eew:

My anthropology textbook disagrees from this, as do I. Tattoos in some cases are counter culture. Frequently, they are also for conformity as well.

You took the words right out of my mouth. ^_^ Yay. That cheered me up a tiny bit.

For me, it's also the bit that who knows what scumbag could've made the tattoo.

Even thinking about tattoos bothers me.

I think that naked skin looks really nice, and don't understand why someone would feel a desire to have an image imprinted on themself.

I've got a couple of tattoos and i remember the days i had them in quite a lot of detail. I think they're ok as long as you have them for your own reasons. Some things are worth taking seriously in life, whether someone has a tattoo or not isn't one of those things.

I find pointless tattoos a huge waste of time. If I ever got a tattoo, I would make it mean something to me.
