does church folks scare anyone else?

through out my life, at times i've been around church folks and some, just listening to them talk scares the hell out of me. i have seen my share of scary people, but most i can walk away from, but a handfull of times i've been somewhat traped in a situation where i couldn't just walk out, and not what they say but there whole persona scares the sh** out of me.not in a way that i fear for myself in this moment, but something inside me fells the horror that dwells in these horrable people. like they know there evils and try to mask it?

I know exactly what you mean. They do not scare me, but I can feel how evil they are. Thats why I try not to get involved with religious people. When I meet church folks I start avoiding them until they get it. Its not only that they have all those twisted concepts their head, but they usually try to "convert" you. I am agnostic. I made that concious decision myself. I do not want to be "converted" to anything. I respect peoples choices, so I expect them to respect mine.

Actually, I find it quite amusing. I've recently taken to visiting various evangelical groups on Facebook (such as "I Am Second") and other websites because I find the content of such sites so amusing. I've actually been thinking of attending a church service just for the laughs (not right there in the pews, of course ).

I'm also agnostic. In person I'm scared that they might try to waste my time trying to convert me, while I figure out strategies to get away. Also, they scare me when they run for office!

I feel sadness and frustration. So many potentially brilliant minds focused on a collection of largely apocryphal stories passed down from father to son over a period of 1500 years, and then recorded in various written forms over the last 2000 years - about 1000 of which were during the "Dark Ages" when religion and superstition ruled most of the Western world.

How much more advanced in the sciences would humanity be if the Dark Ages had never happened? What wonders would we enjoy today if the best human minds had been focused on scientific inquiry instead of hunting down apostates, blasphemers, witches, and other non-believers?

"Churchies" can have their exclusive Bible-based Country Clubs. I'll take a walk through a library, museum, or planetarium instead.

Not all church types scare me. Some i really like and get on well with, but there's a couple of born again type churches in my town and there's this scary sort of enthusiasm about one or two of them that unnerves me. One was telling me she was filled with the joy of the lord, and had been dancing all day. i don't understand thst sort of thing. I can't relate to the emotional churches with the the tamborines etc. I'm just a demure type christian. I like having a good interesting debate about theology, but i don't know how to react to the bouncey types. Everyone is different i suppose.

Yeah, i found a group near me who make me feel safe too

Every church person and every church group is different. Now the more sanctimonious, pious Holy Joes - they scare me.

I am happy to see people quietly acting on their convictions, even if I don't particularly share in those convictions, and I think that describes the majority of church people. When they insist they are absolutely right and have the only correct set of answers, however, thereby possessing the right to impose those convictions on everyone else, I get intolerant of their way of life very quickly.

Mutual tolerance is essential for maintaining a well-ordered society.

That is one of the most over-exaggerated generalizations I have ever heard. I know many people who are very involved in the church, and who are loving, tolerant, and respectful of all people. Quite far from "evil" unless you consider nice, wonderful people to be your definition of evil. I hate stereotypes like this!

There's like a thousand different variants out there... these people just pick and choose from the bible and many of them are extremely bigoted.

When you wrote "Church folks" I assumed you meant fundamentalists who proselytize. If you meant all people who attend church, most of them don't worry me.
