The Duke of Cambridge is interested in saving endangered species. Well, I plan to mail him a letter asking him if he could write a letter for the OMG campaign to collect 1,000 letters to help savet he rhinos. This is rather unthinkable for me. I've always been a firm believer in the mystique of royalty. I still can't believe I have gotten my courage up and am mailing a letter to him. Can you imagine a royal might read something I wrote?

Odds are you may get a reply from his secretary on posh paper with a heraldic crest on top; either of a helpful nature or a standard template reply dismissing your letter along the lines "Thank you for contacting blah blah blah we appreciate you taking the time to write to us.... blah blah blah... he is very busy....". But you never know; I'm just somewhat sceptical.

Good for you in trying to help preserve these gentle giants. They are so unique and almost remind me of living dinosaurs with their horns. I thought I heard another species of Rhino went extinct recently and these are the only ones left ?

What Tallyman says is true, that it is difficult to actually get in contact with famous, rich, powerful people, but one thing is for sure, you never will unless you try. If I can make a suggestion, try to put a personnal touch on the letter so it stands out and gets noticed. Not anything professional looking, but maybe a simple line drawing of a rhino on the back with a few words and symbols, in colors if possible. Something that makes it obvious it is from a real human being.

Yes, definitely try. When I was around 12 years old I noticed something very odd in the book Gulliver's Travels. Gulliver visits a race of people who were hot with astronomy and said they'd discovered that Mars had got two moons. Looking in my kids book of astronomy showed that the two moons of Mars (Phobos and Deimos) were not discovered until a number of years after this book had been first published! The internet didn't exist in those days so after some research in the library I found the name of a high ranking astrophysics professor at a prestigious university and wrote to him asking if he knew the answer to this conundrum. He wrote back, which really impressed me and explained the two moons had been suspected to exist for a number of years before they were officially discovered. Thus explaining my question. I was really chuffed that he wrote back to me.

I'm actually pretty skeptical myself. I know chances are that he might not get it, as he probably gets so much mail that he only gets part of it, probably other people sorting it. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I always thought that about rhinos. They kind of make me think of a mammal version of the triceratops. I think you must mean the northern white rhinos in Garamba park? There were four spotted in 2006, but none since.

I know that Prince William is very much into protecting wildlife. He worked for a while at Lewa during his gap year. That's where he proposed to Catherine. A rhino he knew while working at Lewa was killed by poachers in April.

Well, I didn't draw the rhino, although that's a good idea. I could include it before sending it. I drew a thistle at the bottom of the letter, it being a symbol of Scotland and the Stuarts, and the Stuart dynasty from who he is descended from being my most favorite dynasty. He will be the very first king descended from Charles I to sit on the throne since Queen Anne. And of course, offered congratulations, and hoped that Her Royal Highness feels better soon. I hope it's a girl and that she inherits the Stuart height and charm like her father. Hopefully they give her the name of a Stuart queen or princess.

Are you serious that the book mentioned the two moons before they were discovered?! That's awesome!

My thoughts exactly. :)

Image

I haven't ever tried myself to contact a famous personnage. The only thing similiar was to write to about 12 actors and actresses's asking them to sign a Lion King card for my daughter's collection. (Well it has kinda turned into my collection, but it is for her   ). But I made up a special card to mount the card on and wrote a personnel note and although I got very varied results one after another over time I got nearly all back. Most were signed by secretaries or auto pen but about 4 were signed by the people themselves and nice notes to my daughter. I just got the last back (with a real signature and note) and it has been two years since I sent it!

Well, I mailed it. They told me that it will take about two weeks to get there.

Royals. Meh. They're just people with fancy titles.

It's not just the titles, although I like titles and coat of arms. But I mean, just think who those people are! Prince William is descended from Mary, Queen of Scots, Edward IV, Antoinette de Bourbon, Catherine de Medici, Isabel of Castile, Fernando of Aragon, Catherine II, Peter I, Christian IX to name just a few!

Descent or not, they are still just people. You or I are not anything less than them. We all eat, digest and produce s**t in the same way.

I actually sent a letter to President Obama once for him to enact legislation to help the Postal Service go "Green" by converting all the local delivery vehicles to hybrid/electric to save gas.

I actually recieved a response from him. It was cut-paste letter.

Best Regards,

Jake

That's a very great idea, for the postal service to go green.
