At college, there are two small lifts (elevators, for you Americans out there). At lunchtime they are always ram packed (which is understandable because there are 7 floors and nobody wants to walk that far). They get so busy that ONLY students with mobility problems are allowed to access the lifts from the ground floor - if you're able-bodied, you have to walk up to B-floor and wait in the queue there.
Anyway: I was crammed into a lift with about 8 other people, and it stopped at a floor on the way down. The doors opened and a wheelchair user and her PA were waiting to get in. I got out of the lift to make room for her, expecting at least a couple of other people to do the same (even when I got out, there wasn't nearly enough room for a wheelchair). But no. Not ONE other person got out of the lift. They just stared awkwardly at each other and waited for the doors to close.

I think it's terrible that nobody made room for her. I understand that people already waited ages for the lift and didn't want to get out, but in the end, they COULD use the stairs. The girl in the wheelchair didn't have that choice. Is my college full of asshats or am I overreacting? :?

You're not overreacting. They are jerks. I would have reminded them of the rules and encourage anyone I recognize to leave the elevator and take the stairs, with the implied threat of informing the relevant authorities should they continue to fail to provide the policy demanded "common" courtesy of letting somebody who cannot traverse stairwells aboard the lift.

I'm sure the students could use a little excercize. Why are they so selfish?

They don't care about the Golden Rule.

That's the problem with society, these days.

It seems to be the case since as far as I can remember.
