I only nap for a couple of hours at a time. You could say my body and mind is constantly "switched on" or "on 24 hour duty".

Any body else experience this?

I sleep if I am drunk (not very often!) or there is another adult in the bed (not very often!) lol

I actually love being awake despite it being a waking nightmare as I am the least productive that I have ever been and my moods are so so bad too.

What do you think is wrong with me? Is this called hyper-vigilance or something?

I have two suggestions.

1) If you haven't had your thyroid checked lately, you might want to get that done. Hyperthyroidism can cause insomnia.

2) That may just be your normal circadian rythems. Check out polyphasic sleeping. There are several different schedules for it, and you might adjust to those a lot better than the usual 8 hours at night sleep that we think is normal now.

I sleep about four hours every night, regardless of how tired I am or am not, and I can only sleep about an hour at a time without waking up.

Melatonin helps me sleep in normal patterns.

I've gone through a two month period of not sleeping one fall and I was put on sleeping pills for a month.

I sleep 4-5 hours at night maximum, I have never been a long sleeper. I sometimes have to take a nap after school to freshen up, usually just a 30 minute power-nap but a nice excuse to get into jimmie-jams.
