My dogs got out last night

They are back home now though. I was so worried.

My youngest daughter didn't shut the front door all the way behind her. It's hard to shut and you have to check it. She was in a hurry and thought it shut. It didn't. They both got out. They are wold hybrids.

We got one in right away, but the other stayed out all night. I was terrified that he would get hit by a car or shot. They look like wild animals, and you can't see the collar because of all the fur. I was afraid somebody would think they were straight up wolves from the woods and shoot them.

The other one came in about 6am when it started to rain.

They aren't a danger to people. To them, all humans are alphas so they don't bite humans. They will however get extremely aggressive with other dogs. I was afraid also that they would kill one of the neighborhood dogs, but so far I don't think they did. I don't think any of the neighbors saw them out, because if they did, they would have caught them and brought them home. As I said, they are sweet as can be to people.

Whew. Glad thats over with and they are home.

My dogs used to be nightmares with this sort of thing when they were younger, you couldnt open the door for a second without them seizing the chance to make a run for freedom lol. Theyre both pretty much geriatric now though and dont have the energy or will to run off. Theyd much rather stay inside snoring away on the couch

We used to have a problem with them digging out of the back yard. We solved that by having the fence electrified with a mild current which doesn't do any damage to them or people who may touch it, it just hurts.

They are worse about it and way more aggressive to other animals, and each other in the winter. We had them neutered, so that helped some, but not completely. It's the wolf in them that makes them get that way in the winter.

They are beautiful dogs, and very good too normally. They are a bit destructive and were hard to housebreak, but they rarely have accidents now, and don't tear stuff up much. It's just their aggression toward other dogs that I worry about when they get out, cars, and people thinking they are wild animals.

All dogs should be trained and/or convinced that home is the place to be. I train my animals to know what pleases and displeases me. Running away displeases me, coming back pleases me, although it can be hard to not yell about it when they do come back!

Glad they made it back, hopefully coming home to a nice dry house out of the rain will help drive the point "home".

I have pictures of them, but I don't have one of those accounts where you put the pictures to put them on here. It sounds complicated and like something I wouldn't want to fool with.

I have yet to post pictures of the bunny for that reason too.

Wolf hybrids are extremely hard to train in anything. They don't have as much of the desire to please you as regular dogs do. It was hard enough to housebreak them and stop the constant destruction.

They don't go off though. They mainly stay on our street. The one who was out all night stayed in the front yard. When we tried to get him he would run off just far enough and stop and look at us. You cannot lure them with food, they won't come when you call them, etc. Not when they are like that outside. They mind fairly well when inside the house, but outside, fenced back yard or unfenced front yard, they do not mind. They feel like they are the kings out there.

They are very aware that we are all displeased with them when they run off or go out front and won't come right back in. They simply do not care and there is no way to make them care.

Me too! I was so worried about them. We got one in right away, but the other one is the problem to catch. He's wise to our tricks of luring with food. He's the one who gets out more often. He is also the one who looks wolfier of the two and is easily mistaken for a full blooded wild wolf. The other one looks wolfish, but he could be mistaken for another breed. This one though looks straight up wolf. Slanted yellow eyes and all.

It's not nice, but is there some way to scare them in? Are they afraid of thunder?

I didn't mean to sound critical, I was thinking rather about making them want to be home.

No, outside they aren't afraid of much of anything. That's the problem. They would run into traffic, they would attack other dogs, they would walk up to strangers and get either stolen or shot. The reason that the one who was out all night came in this morning is that he was tired and hungry and it had started raining.

He was technically home. He stays in the front yard for the most part, sometimes he runs up the street but he comes right back. I live on a cul de sac and there isn't traffic here. A block away is a main road, but it's just a country two lane. It's not that busy but there is a hill that you come over right before my house and they could get hit before the driver could stop. There are also chickens, cows, horses, sheep, goats and pigs all within walking distance from my house and the fencing won't keep him out.

I've used all the tricks with him. They work one time. He knows if he gets close enough to grab, he's coming back inside. At first when he got out, I could fall down and yell like I was hurt and he would run over. He learned that one. Then I would get in the car and pull up along side him and ask if he wanted to go for a ride. He'd get in, we would ride around a minute, then I'd bring him in. No more of that. Then I'd go for a walk with the leash hidden in my hand. He would follow me. I'd walk up to the grocery store or to the liqour store next door to it and go in and he would follow me and I could put him on the leash and we would come home. Not gonna happen again. He knows it now. I used to lure him with food. Closer and closer like a Hansel and Gretal trail to the door and then inside the foyer. I'd hide and when he would dart in to get it, I'd grab him. That doesn't work either. Lately, I've been paying neighbor kids to grab him for me after playing with him for a minute. That didn't work last night. Most of the neighbors weren't out, but a couple were up and the kids helped but couldn't get him. The only other option I can think of is a tranqualizer gun, and if I had one, I'd sure use it.

He stinks though. He smells like he's been rolling in something dead. He's being made to stay off the furniture for right now, and he's very hard to bathe, so my husband will give him a bath when he gets home tomorrow.

Sounds like my border collie, always trying to skate by on a technicality...
