Do you use the chat room?

I am enquiring to find out if the chat function is trustworthy. I cannot seem to access it without
first downloading the Java plug-in. Is this safe?

When I was here years ago there was an IRC room (which could be what he meant). I've been wondering if it's still active.

I'm pretty sure its safe. java is the real deal

Try going to http://webchat.freenode.net/ and type in #wrongplanet for the channel if the java app seems a bit iffy.
Java in and of itself is pretty safe but sometimes the implementation on different machines can cause problems, but I've had no problems with using freenode.

Please note that #wrongplanet is self-contained and separate from Wrong Planet, the web site. Any issues with IRC or other users on the channel can only be resolved via the Chat Operators on #wrongplanet itself.
The moderation team here on Wrong Planet has no influence or control there so please don't as us to step in and help - because we can't.

Meh, I hate chat rooms. Too many people sending things at once, and everyone ignores what you say.

I've had an intense fear of chat rooms since the January of 2007.

Never used one. Too real-timey for me.

i am too deliberative a thinker [and too inexpert a typist] for chat to be practical for me.

Nope. It's been maybe a year since I have last been there.

It didn't work when I last tried it and having seen some comments on here about it, I feel rather dubious about trying again to be honest.

I tried once, things happened on that chat too fast for me.

Keeping Java enabled in your browser can be a security risk, especially if you install it once and don't update it. I avoid using it whenever I can.

To answer the main question, no, I've never used the WP chat room and I doubt I ever will.
