So I was watching Tapestries of Hope, which told the stories of children in Zimbabwe being abused and raped. Of course, it doesn't show violence, you just see people telling their stories, which I see nothing wrong with.

My brother walks in, he's a little older than me, and apparently, he found me watching the documentary disgusting. It wasn't graphic or anything, it was people telling stories without using euphemisms or censoring it, and he tells me it's messed up or whatever because of the topic.

So I can't watch documentaries talking about brutal things? People can play violent video-games, watch horror movies, but can't watch a video of people telling stories? What's up with that?

Are you sure he wasn't calling the subject matter/subject disgusting, not you for learning about it?
I dunno.
Maybe I have an idealistic view of people. 8O

I asked, "Dude, I'm watching a documentary."
He said, "Dude, it's about rape!"
I replied, "It's not like I"m watching a porno!"

I still don't understand how it would be worse than, oh say, a documentary about a genocide.

Maybe it's the subject matter that he finds unsettling.

Possibly, but I don't see how it's okay for other topics that can be equally unsettling.

It's a touchy subject matter, and a lot of people can't stomach it. Especially when children are involved.

Maybe he thinks you are getting aroused to listening to people tell about how they got raped, and that would be absolutely disgusting and just horrible.

I'm not THAT messed up.

I don't really care that much what he thinks, I'm just curious about how and why he reacted in a certain way.

That's one of the weirdest things i've ever heard. I don't see anything disgusting about it. It's informative and you learn from it. It shows you what happens in the world and in life.

I grew up seeing documentaries every day on tv. Since my dad loves to watch that and the news.
I've heard alot of weird things from Americans that in Europe i believe most don't find weird at all.
I sort of got the impression all that americans get to see on tv is family guy, cheesy movies and overcensored news.
Everything is graphic or disgusting to them.

THANK YOU!! !

I hate it when people censor things too much.

Although one part he would get pretty grossed out by was when a woman who was advocating education was describing in detail about how girls, due to their economic status, couldn't afford feminine hygiene products so they used various things like sticks for tampons and newspaper for pads. He didn't see that part though. I liked the name of it. "Tapestries of Hope"

Now, another part I don't get is when he's completely disgusted by the documentary but he's perfectly fine with showing me clips of Jackass 3D.

Well, there you already have it, then. He's a moron. Anyone who likes Jackass has a defective brain.

I personally cannot watch documentaries about rape, though. It depresses the hell out of me, and makes me start listing rapists that should be killed. Not that it would be a bad thing if I did go through with removing some from society, but it's very depressing to think about, anyway. I really do hate this world. :/

People can have this type of reaction about anything. My mum walked in on me watching CSI Vegas and said 'Stop watching murder movies in the middle of the night'.

She might be traumatised by the time she saw American Psycho on cables in the middle of the night, and came to tell me how weird it was the next day, and I told her I know the film (was actually a huge fan then).
