The Pi Searcher lets you search for any string of digits (up to 120 of them) in the first 200 million digits of Pi.

join my cool club. thusly named because i have not yet thought of a proper name for the club. but i have a cool idea. well i think it is cool, and this is the opinion that matters. maybe i will keep the name of the club as the cool club. thats pretty cool. but i will also take suggestions to possibly usurp.

a thread has a number, it is up at the url. take that number and find its location in the first 200 million.

the first person to state the position within pi of the thread number, wins the point for that thread. I recommend you also make a meaningful contribution to whichever thread you are posting to, and claim your point at the end of your post.

who will keep track of the points? not i! you can keep track of your own points if you so choose, but there is as of yet no additional reward for earning points. the important part is just being part of the club.

how to join the cool club?

here state your intention as such, and then start earning points.

this is the first point

The string 4358601 occurs at position 2,573,719 counting from the first digit after the decimal point. The 3. is not counted.

subsequent points need be claimed by dropping the position at the end of your post, like this :

@ 2,573,719

whoa i am super confused. when i went to look at the 'first point' the number went up to 4358605. i think this is the number of the post, if i click the thread link to cool club, it is 188238, which is @ 220,290

this is confirmed. if i click the thread link it remains 188238. this is the way points are earned.

uh huh, same thing

The string 188238 occurs at position 220,290 counting from the first digit after the decimal point. The 3. is not counted.

I may participate! (but if I don't it is no insult I promise)

Very simple, sorry sometimes i get too wordy.

thus follows, a step by step :

1. Click on the title of the thread (other than this one, i already took the point)
* now you know you are looking at the thread number, not your post number
2. Copy the thread number
3. go to http://www.angio.net/pi/piquery
4. insert the thread number
5. click search pi
6. copy the position at which that string of digits occurs
7. post your post, tacking at the end of your post, the position, for example @ 220,290
8. return here
9. declare yourself the first member of the cool club! (other than i, the progenitor of the cool club)

infinitenull or Burzum may honorarily be considered the first member should you wish to officially declare yourself a member, whether someone else actually starts to earn points before you. and Burzum in precedence over infinitenull on account of the cute kitty picture

Second point was very creative and clever. i like. Congrats as the first member of the Cool Club! and only so far other than myself . . . . i really thought this would catch on like a wildfire with a bunch of autists. I think I need to compose a more succinct and articulate way of explaining the premise of the club.

Also if i didnt make it clear, this is not meant to be a competition, no pressure do this except once in a blue moon or whenever you feel like it. The important part is to do it at least once and be a part of the club.

So . . . . can we get a second member?

I'm going to maintain a club member roster for as long as it is feasible to do so. which it EASILY is as of now.

I think the biggest issue is the complexity. It requires going to another thread and backtracking through the site to search and other things. For some that might be difficult. It took me deciding that I was willing to put 100% focus into it to participate.

However, doing so, at least once... shows not only that you are obsessive about numbers but that you are able to participate in super cool social grooviness

Who says spectrumites aren't social!? it just takes a common interest to bond us!

I'll try to remember to do a couple tomorrow to, maybe spread the word some :)
