It seems I am suffering from a stuffed up, aching ear, along with a b***h of a cold. My wife's uncle is working on our car, and I don't expect to see it anytime soon, as he works on it outside, and has a full time job, so just driving to the doctor is not an option. My friends don't live close by, and I feel I've asked too much of them already, as like me, they're a bunch of bohemian bums living in genteel poverty, too. So, what can I do for my earache here at home? If anyone has a remedy at hand, I'd greatly appreciate it, as it hurts.

That sounds like an ear infection :( I'd use camomile tea, which is anti-inflammatory. Brew a strong camomile tea, add a little iodine and give a few drops right into the ear. Then make an earplug out of tissues or toilet paper, soak it it in the tea and plug the ear. If you don't have iodine, you can also soak some garlic in the hot tea. Garlic has antibiotic properties.

(Camomile is pretty much a universal remedy that helps with all kinds of inflammation. Sore throat? Gargle with camomile tea. Acne? Warm camomile compresses. Gastritis? Drink 8-10 cups of tea a day. It even helps with my Crohn's disease).

Thanks for responding. This earache is keeping me from getting much sleep. I don't know if I have any of that stuff on hand, though. When my wife gets up, I'll ask her.

Garlic oil is a great natural antibiotic for ear infections. We used it on the kids instead of regular meds when they got ear infections. You just put a few drops in the ear about four times a day. Massage behind the ear to get it down in there.

Also, warmed olive oil, a few drops in the ear, can help with the pain.

I'd also reccommend some kind of NSAID. Motrin, Aleve, Naprosyn, etc. Those would work better than Tylenol. If you have something like Tramadol or Toradol, those are great for ear pain as well. I busted an ear drum a couple of years ago by cleaning my ears with a bobby pin. Yeah, I know. I did it anyway though. They gave me Toradol and it was great. Non narcotic but with as much pain relieving power as morphine almost.
