Now in Virginia, I don't know how long they have done this, but when you take picture, you can't smile. What? So a teen who gets new license can't smile? I wonder why. My license expires at end of year. It's good for 8 years now. So I need to go back to DMV this year, retake picture and do the vision test. I don't need any exams since I have no tickets. Some states when you move and apply for a license you have to retake all exams. I failed the exam once, then requested written and passed. The roads test I passed easily first time. I did get my license at 17 but a US military one, and that didn't count when I move back to the US. I had to redo all exams, get a permit, then license. Back the permits were side profile before age 21, then after it's front. But now it's front for anyone. So now when I get new VA license, they give me this paper license, then few days or so I get my license in mail. They used to give you your license on the spot. I haven't been back to DMV for many years. I renewed online, so now I can't because my picture is old. Oh the long wait at DMV, oh joy joy! Anyone else has same thing going on in their state, where you get a paper license, then the real license is mailed to you?

I take full advantage of my license photos and never smile. It's my personal mugshot.

That's pretty wierd, because I've always smiled in driver's licence pics and mug shots. They have told me not to smile in mug shots but I've said "Sorry, it's this or nothing" and kept that stupid grin on my face.

I haven't had an actual drivers licence in close to 25 years because of a drunk driver and civil suit that I didn't know about in Virginia back when we got married. I still drive though. I get my driverls license back next month, thank God, so of course, I'll smile in it. Here, they give you the paper one right then, and mail you the regular one. I remember way back when, when my mother and grandparents license's didn't even have pictures on them, and they were just paper.
