My mum invited this guy round who she knows from a shop she volunteers at. He's coming at half past 7 tonight. She says he has learning difficulties and has a mental age of about 9 or 10, although he is in fact 21 years old. I've never met him before and I'm nervous, but my mum said he's lonely and needs a friend. I'm a bit anxious about letting a stranger in my room, touching my stuff etc. And what would we talk about? Apparently he is also very "in your face", which I must admit concerns me.

If I just ask him a bunch of questions then it would only come out sounding like an interview, and I have a tendency to talk to everyone in the same manner - no matter what their age, mental age, or capabilities. So I don't want to confuse him but if I try to act different I might just end up being patronising and come across as fake and weird.

Feedback please? I'll let you know how it went.

Personally, I would try to act as naturally as possible, but that's just me

Good luck, I'm sure it will go better than you think! Learn about his interests and the next time you see him, talk about his interests or do something that relates to his interests.

He came round (15 minutes earlier than expected) we sat in the living room with my parents, him and my dad watched football, we had a beer.

He was mainly talking to my mum and dad about all sorts and he asked me lots of questions about myself, mainly concerning my interests (I didn't monologue him much) I thought it would have to be the other way round but he was more like the interviewer and I was more like the interviewee.

I was glad my parents were there because it took a lot of the pressure off of me. All in all it went alright.

Strange thing is though, I found out that his step-dad is my GP who I've been seeing about getting assessed for an ASD, and I've been invited round to his house tomorrow at 7pm. So I'm going to my GP's house! 8O

I can just imagine what he'll be like when he sees me at his door....

Double post, blah.

Anyway my mum said my GP won't discuss anything with me at all about my assessment, or even mention that he knows of me already as he won't be at work, and because of patient confidentiality etc, but I'll know that he knows. :pale:

However, this could mean that I start to get more comfortable around him for future visits.

This would be awkward.
