Have you ever had a special interest in languages/a language/linguistics?

How many languages do you know (you can speak, read, write, understand, etc. with at least 40-50% proficiency)?

Other. I read several (European only) languages fluently and several more tolerably but struggle to speak or write them.

I speak English and Spanish and I have about 30% proficiency in Mandarin. I've been studying Mandarin for 3 years, but it is very tough to learn.

I used to years ago. I wanted to spend time in Europe, & so I learned other languages. Started with French but it was a difficult for me to pronounce or master. Changed to German, & was nearly fluent for a very long time. I can still pick out bits & pieces but it's been too many years with little practice. I also took American Sign language & did quite well at it. Later, I tried learning Irish on my own because it has such a beautiful sound but I did not have the discipline nor the ear/tongue to learn it. Very difficult, & for me had too many similarities to French (pronunciation, sentence structure, etc).

Only in German have I achieved any proficiency over all. But that's all gone now, sadly.

I am fluent in English (1st language) and also French. I can read Hebrew, and will be able to translate it to some extent at least after next year since I am taking a class in university.

Just one, that obviously being English. :P I was considering selecting the option for 1.5 languages, as I learnt a foreign language at school, but nearly all the information has long since escaped me.

Neither languages nor linguistics has ever been an interest, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility...

Yay, I love linguistics!
I am a native English speaker, and I studied Spanish for 3.5 years in college.
I've also dabbled in Arabic, Hebrew, and Chinese, but I can't use them functionally at all. I definitely plan to learn at least one more language fluently or near-fluently, but I don't know which one yet.

So about linguistics, for those of you who have studied it, what is you favorite area? I'm studying descriptive and applied linguistics. I love syntax and morphology (i.e. grammar). When I start to recognize a grammar structure in a language I just started studying, it makes me so happy :P ...lol

I've just recently become interested in languages. I hope to learn at least four.

English is obviously my first language. Or, given how I usually mangle it, maybe not so obviously.

I can understand spoken spanish, so long as the person doesn't speak too fast. And I can read it almost as easily as reading english. Can't speak it very well though, with a bit of effort I can make myself understood but it would be obvious to anyone that it's not my first language.

I actually spoke it pretty fluently as a kid. My great-grandmother was the last member of my family to speak only spanish. When she died all the older members of the family, who spoke both, pretty much just switched to english full-time and I lost the opportunity to practice.
