Anyone here fear going to dentists for even simple cleaning? I know one person who has to be sedated! She's that nervous. I'm ok with the cleaning and bite way x rays, but when they mention root canal, crowns, fillings, I get scared. Root canals aren't cheap either! Insurance does help, but still the cost is like $1000 or more! I have had wisdom teeth taken out, but they were impacted so I was completely sedated for that. My gums itched for few days, and that was uncomfortable, and there were some bleeding and I had to have some cloths in my mouth and I got some pain meds, but it was ok. But fillings, root canals? Are they painful?

Try going to an Orthodontist appointment. :x

(Yes, I have braces.)

UGH:( I never had to wear braces plus the dental plan I picked for the company I work for, doesn't cover orthodontist. :(

I've never had a root canal (knock on wood) but I can say this: fillings stink!! They stick you with a needle (which I'm petrified of) and then you get numb and it feels really weird. Or worse, they can give you the "laughing gas" which I think is downright creepy. And then they drill your teeth. It's not really painful because you're numb, but be prepared!

If you are afraid of needles or numbness, it might be possible to find a dentist in your area who uses an air-abrasion or laser drill. This doesn't require numbing you in some cases, but every now and then you might feel a little brief pain when they do it.

I absolutely avoid going to the dentist at all costs because I hate the sound of those metal instruments scraping against my teeth. I never felt comfortable with another person doing stuff in my mouth.

I had 4 wisdom's removed all at once while awake and apparently partially numb (atleast by the time he pulled the last tooth). I think they heard me yelling in pain even in the lobby.

I took ibuprofen for a week and a half, 400 to 600mg twice or 3 times a day and filled a 12 oz cup full of blood after the surgery. No big deal really, I found the amount of people in proximity more distressing during the surgery. Cracking teeth and such wasn't so bad.

The only part I really hate are needles. I have issues with depersonalization and feeling zoned out, so I opted out of the gas.

I've had 4 root canals and crowns, 5 or so more fillings, 4 wisdom's pulled, and I have to go in for 2 or 3 more root canals and 3 crowns soon. It was 12 teeth in all not including the wisdoms they found a issue with..

This is what you get for not taking care of your teeth.

It's not the dentist visit that frightens me, it's the bill they send me after lol! Joking aside though, I really do hate going, but I don't fear it....it's just a really uncomfortable experience. I don't think anyone actually enjoys going, but it is necessary to keep those teeth healthy!

I actually really look forward to going to the dentist. If my insurance covered it I would go more often. I like to really take care of my teeth at home and I love going to the dentist and having a really thorough cleaning.

I had braces & my orthodontist was was very rough & lots of his patients hated him. He kept gripping at me about how dirty my teeth were & he gripped to the nurses about how my teeth weren't moving at a faster place & were still out of place. But as soon as the insurance quit covering it he took them off & said my teeth were great & no more could be done. i got my 1st cavity shorty after I quit seeing him but I never had one sense. That was over 10 years ago

Haven't been since I was about 11. Blame my Mum. She needs to find a new one. Not that I like it or anything, I've actually become even more shy because of other people talking about going there (I don't want to imagine that), but I'm worried about my teeth.

I go twice a year to get teeth cleaned and once a year they do those x rays. I don't mind the sound of the tool when they clean the teeth. At times I have gagged due to taste of the paste they use to clean, but not so much lately. They have great flavors like chocolate or vanilla. The last time I got a filling was 3 years ago. It was the kind that matches the color of your tooth. But it was on side so it wasn't bad at all. But this filling he needs to do is on top of a tooth. So it is deep. But deep or not deep filling, does it matter? I can ask for laughing gas, but can I drive afterwards? I can still go to work after IF I need a root canal? I have this scheduled for tomorrow morning at 9. My dental insurance covers 50% of root canals, fillings, crowns. I do brush and floss every day. I have sensitive teeth too.

I'm still numb and sore. The shot to give the numbing medicine was ok, just the taste wasn't that great. He numbed me twice. He had to do re filling. So the annoying part was the drilling sound to take out the old filling. I found out that the tooth was filled in Jan 2004, so not that long ago. But it had to be refilled. I guess because it was so deep and on top of the tooth. I had another one done in summer 2009 which matched natural tooth color and that is fine. I had 2 fillings done in 1990 but those were on side of teeth and not deep and they are ok. So no root canal yet. Now if I feel pain still after several weeks, then I need root canal. Now my dental only covers 50% for root canals, fillings and crowns! I should have picked the enhanced plan which would make me have more coverage. 90% for root canals and fillings, and 60% for crowns. For those of you in military, is your dental coverage better? Now I don't know if maybe dad picked a different plan, but he told me when he needed root canal and crowns he had to pay 100% of the entire procedures! He's retired army. It is strange how once you are retired from military, you can't go to an on base dentist, yet everything else you can go to.

I forgot to mention this problem I had with that orthodontist. he gave me the shot 2wice because it wasn't numb enough rite after he gave it the 1st time. It takes a little bit for things like that to be effective on me. Ask the dentist if they can wait a bit before giving you a 2nd shot

I have mixed feelings, I can't pinpoint how I feel about going to the dentist. It's obviously not really a pleasant experience, but I don't freak out, though I do feel nervous. There's really nothing to do when I'm on the chair, the light's really bright, and the sound of some of the tools make me cringe.

I was absolutely terrified of the dentist as a little kid. Sometimes, I'd be on the verge of crying whenever we drove by the office. They used to tie me down during appointments; I've only learned that through my mother. My mind repressed all those early memories of going to the dentist, haha. Eventually, I had to pretend to be brave, and the mask just stuck, I guess. It's still probably just a mask though.

I don't remember having anything like that done on me (crowns, root canals), so I can't really say anything. :(
