Four is the cosmic number
12 is 6, 6 is 3, 3 is 5, 5 is 4 and 4 is the cosmic number
20 is 6, 6 is 3, 3 is 5, 5 is 4 and 4 is the cosmic number
8 is 5, 5 is 4 and 4 is the cosmic number

Does anyone care helping me? My school teacher put this up in class one day but I just. . . can't figure it out and it's driving me crazy. Any help would be apriciated. I would of put this in the school forums but I figured some people would enjoy to work there brains alittle with this problem. . . I know I'm working it alot. @.@

Have you tried binary notation? Although there will most likely be some ultra-simple, yet left-field and yet oh-so-obvious answer to it.....

hmm...
... is 4 the 'cosmic number' because the word 'FOUR' has four letters ?.....

If that is the answer, then it would also work for the other examples you gave:

(twelve has six letters, six has three letters, three has five letters....and so on)

12 is 6, 6 is 3, 3 is 5, 5 is 4 and 4 is the cosmic number
20 is 6, 6 is 3, 3 is 5, 5 is 4 and 4 is the cosmic number
8 is 5, 5 is 4 and 4 is the cosmic number
21 is 9, 9 is 4 and 4 is the cosmic number

:D
sorry if you already worked it out, anyway this is my guess
...

I guess I'm late to the party, but yes, it's about the number of letters in each number (in english, of course). Took me a while to get it because my brain works in spanish internally.

Uno has 3.
Dos has 3.
Tres has 3.
Cuatro has 5.
Cinco has 5.

So 5 is the cosmic number for the spanish.

ein has 1
zwei has 4

Got it. The letters on the top row have curves, and those on the bottom row are made of straight lines.
