This was a dog fight worthy of Michael Vick, and it was their own idea. They are wolf hybrids and they used to fight really bad in the winter. I mean they would try and kill each other every winter when they would go outside, and we had to keep them seperate. Since they have been fixed we haven't had a problem. They play fight all the time, but there hasn't been any aggression lately.

Tonight I fed them as usual and put both bowls outside on the back deck. Sometimes we feed them both inside, sometimes both outside, sometimes one in and one out. It doesn't matter. Usually. The white dog normally attacks his food like he's starving to death and it's gone before I can even walk across the room and the grey and white one is more polite. This evening the white one wouldn't go near his food. His was untouched and the grey and white had eaten about half of his and was guarding it, like he does.

I went outside to see what was wrong with the white one and see if I could coax him to eat because he's never not eaten. Ever. I got him near his bowl and all of a sudden the other one jumped on him and they went at it. This was serious fighting, as in trying to kill each other. Going for the throat. It took my son and me to seperate them and he had to literally pick the grey and white one up and carry him in the house. The white one ate after that, and I got on to the grey and white one and he knows he's in trouble.

After the food was gone I let them in and they are fine. No fighting at all. Laying by each other and biting fleas off each other.

I hope this isn't the start of a whole new cycle of aggression with them because I'm not putting up with it.

They are fine. The gey and white one knows he's in big trouble and he's sufficiently submissive now that he's inside. The white one who got jumped is getting extra petting. They didn't really draw much blood this time, so that's good, but before they were fixed they were more viscious to each other in the winter. This is the first fight after them being fixed.

Obviously, knowing the triggers is the best thing, and going from there; food is a very worthy thing to fight over for animals. You could try medicating them to calm them down (vet will prescribe such); if they're more laid back from drugs, it goes without saying that they'll be easier going with one another.

I'm assuming they're kept away from neighbors' animals via fences/tying up/kept inside? (Just checking, as dogs are serious critters, especially heavily pack orientated ones. The amount of times I've seen serious dogs on the loose in rural areas makes me cringe.) Nothing worst than having roaming dogs that attack others (well, roaming dogs that attack humans would be it).

I'm glad that things have calmed down at last. :)

I have issues with my two occasionally too. I have one female wolf hybrid (50/50) and one male full blood wolf.

Every time they really go at each other, it is always over food. I think it's more common with fullbloods or hybrids because the instincts are much stronger. Both of mine required much firmer training and a much firmer hand in general than a dog in order to keep them in line. When they start like that, I usually have to be the one to stop it. If they are both male, then I expect they would be more likely to fight, even if they are fixed.

I can't help but think that was quite dangerous :?

My father is a medic, and he has attended several cases of people with really nasty bites who intervened in dog fights. At least one of them ended with the loss of several fingers, and it was from a poodle.

Be careful

I read this and assumed one of two things:

1. You were a fighter pilot somehow posting on Wrong Planet and were posting classified top secret information about your air to air battle over Iranian airspace from your iphone.

2. You actually fought dogs.

I was ready to tell you were either awesomely amazing you or reprehensible, horrible human being that should die.

I'm glad neither of my predictions were true and that everything is going fine and your dogs aren't hurt too badly :)

They are fine and they ate nicely tonight. It's raining so we fed them both inside, one in the kitchen and the other in the den and there were no fights, growls or anything. The white one was kind of tiptoeing around with his tail straight out and his hair standing up though, I think he was afraid he was going to get jumped, but the grey and white one didn't do anything. He ate, drank water, then laid down in the middle of the floor and licked himself and went to sleep.

You might want to just start feeding them in two different rooms, with ours we have to put there food bowls fairly far apart to keep them from getting grouchy.

Hybrids in the first place are not something a person should have unless they are very experienced and understand animals extremely well (even more so for full bloods). Too many get returned or put down because owners don't know what they are doing.

I intervene because I know it is safe to do so. They respect me too much to injure me, even when they're mad. They remember what happened the few times they did when they were little.

If you try to do it and you do not have very good control over them normally and/or they don't have a lot of respect for you or if you don't know what you're doing, then yes, you will get hurt. It's not something I condone doing unless the person in question knows exactly what they are doing.

We have had these for several years and are very experienced with them. We have had to intervene in fights many times during the winters when they would get aggressive. After they were fixed, there weren't any more fights until this past one. They definately respect us and I'm their alpha since I take care of them. I can reach down and take their food away and they don't do anything about it, but I only do it when I need to move their bowl or if they have something they shouldn't have. I've only been bitten by accident once when breaking up a fight.
