I've heard that people that go on 4chan are lets just say nasty people. What do they do besides calling everyone they see online autistic as an insult? Why is 4chan such a bad place? I NEED TO KNOW

All sorts of people go on 4chan. The important thing to know about 4chan is that everybody (usually) posts anonymously. All of the interesting properties of 4chan stem from this fact. For example, 4chan is the only social situation I know of where most people are pretending to be more horrible than they actually are.

It's such a shame that 4chan actually creates jerks.

I really don't think that it does. I think that perfectly normal people go on 4chan and pretend to be jerks as a hobby, but it doesn't actually change who they are. I don't post on 4chan much anymore, but I used to. There is something about anonymity that makes people behave strangely. It's like somebody is offering you the opportunity to pretend to be someone else, at no cost to your reputation. So, people pretend to be bigots and tough guys just to see what it's like.

in a way what I was trying to say that's why I don't do 4chan because I'm too nice for it.

Well, you're only 13, so you probably shouldn't go on 4chan anyway, especially given the type of banner ads they tend to run!

But there are some relatively harmless boards on 4chan, where you end up laughing more than you cry. I think that currently, /v/ is a nice median between the in-jokey humour of the more specialised boards and the total anarchy of /b/.

I'd definitely wait a few years if I were you. It doesn't matter which board you go to, people will occasionally post some pretty messed-up stuff. Even if you're just there for the banter, you might find it hard to explain to your parents when they catch you looking at some kind of cartoon porn.

Good point.

I think 4chan is more depressing than anything else. Also if you're very impressionable and influenced by everything people say around you I'd avoid the site. I think 4chan's system is technically better than reddit's because on the latter site you have people who just upvote or downvote stuff and it becomes a popularity contest. In theory 4chan could be a great place but instead people use it to be insufferable a**holes, misogynists who think they know everything, racist etc. /x/ use to be the board I'd go to for awhile but now its flooded with spam BS because people are bored, the /vg/ board was a great place for the first month but now its fallen under the same curse as the other boards.

Disagree.

Have you even been on reddit? Or do you just know the system?

If you post awesome s**t, it's awesome s**t. People will upvote it.

If you post annoying, irrelevant, or stupid s**t, etc. it's annoying, irrelevant, or stupid s**t, etc. People will downvote it.

Simple.

Reddit is way, WAY too big of a place for people to really be "Oh, I like this person but I don't like this one..." unless you're posting in very, very small subreddits.

With a place like WP, for example, when a lot of people know a lot of people, upvotes and downvotes could be a concern for those who like to b***h about who is popular and who isn't.
Or most forums, actually.

The upvote and downvote system works very well for reddit and I'm pretty sure a large majority of people who use it would agree. It wouldn't be reddit without it.

As far as 4chan being a great place in theory, it's not really relevant.
If the point of the place is anonymity, people will be harsh and cruel.
They just will.
You can say whatever and not have your name tied onto it, so people really will say/post whatever.

There's actually no such thing on the 'net. Everything written and recorded can be read and recorded by the authorities, and everything is tagged by a unique signature.

The authorities just have more important stuff to watch, which is why "anonymity" is often taken as it is.

I hope you really do know what I meant...
The "Anonymous" thing; not having a screen name/username/etc. to use so people know who you are as you are posting. When you are on the site itself, you are not attacking people that seem "real" to you as you don't know who the person is by something like a username or real name. You, as just a regular poster, have no idea who is who so you don't really feel like you're attacking anyone specifically when you do it. And they, as regular posters, didn't know who was attacking them.

You took it far too literally.

I've only been on reddit a few times, I just recall a topic on GW2 there where people started listing actual faults with the game and everyone and their grandma started to downvote those comments and they were drowned out in praise. This is really the only example I have to go by so I admit to not being an expert. I'm sure your example applies 90% of the time.
