My youngest daughter (the goth one) told me these.

How can you tell which is the girl in a goth couple? The girl is the fat one.

What is the main job of a goth? Denying they are goth.

The first joke seemed offensive to me but my daughter said it's basically true. She is also overweight. She said there are four skinny goth girls. The rest are heavy girls and skinny guys. She said she can find her size much easier in goth stores than regular stores.

As for the other one, she's not a goth. In her black bedroom. With the dead flowers. And the black and white photos of cemetaries on the wall. And every item in her wardrobe is black. The girl who has cannibal Hello Kitty on her jammies. She's not a goth.

I got a laugh out of it, because it's true, but most stereotype based jokes are

Locally they used to call them Death Rockers in the 80s

So you have your Marilyn Manson types and then you have:Image

I've found that to be true of my own (admittedly limited) experiences with goth clothes. I bought a pair of goth pants once and they lasted 5 years before I couldn't fit them anymore, whereas much of the time, it seems that regular clothes that fit me one year probably won't fit me the next.

Same could be said of hipsters, from what I've heard.

I love the Bauhaus, The Cure, Mindless Self Indulgence, Skinny Puppy and the Birthday Massacre..does this make me a goth? I think old cemeteries are neat and have black curtains (or did at one point).

I'm not fat though and don't wear black very much.

That's the Americanized teen glee version of Goth that you are referring towards.

Here's a good video list of actual symphonic Gothic metal bands.

Goth metal, and symphonic goth metal, are two different genres, similar, but different.

Interesting, nearly all of the goth females I ever knew were rail-thin and the men were likewise. There were some exceptions, but usually those involved what the goths referred to as "mall-goths" or "poseurs." Goths can make good friends in my experience. They tend to embrace your quirkiness and unusualness. It's also nice that they have the same musical tastes as I do (at least when it comes to industrial and EBM).

Have't you noticed that recently many department stores like Peebles, Kohls, and even JC Penny's has some clothing with a goth or industrial bent? (I'm a rivethead, by the way)

I don't think we have a Peebles where I live, I've never been to Kohl's before (although we do have one) and it's been awhile since the last time I went to JC Penny's, but the next time I go to the mall, I will be sure to take a look at the selection of clothes and see if I notice a trend towards goth/industrial stuff.

One thing I have noticed, though, is that Walmart currently carries a lot of bohemian-style clothes.
