The Olympics is nearly upon us, and already I am sick and tired of hearing the term "Team GB". It only exists as a marketing and copyright exercise (somebody realised that you can't really copyright the name of a country, and you'd lose a fortune not being able to licence the use of the name and logo). I realise the term "Team GB" has been around for a while, but with the Olympics being at home this time, it's being used endlessly. Why can't we be called Great Britain? It is, after all, the name of our f****** country! Almost every other country is called by their name, quite reasonably, that's what having a name for your country is all about. It's just so crass reducing our country's name to its initials. Fair enough, USA do it, but that's because the full name is 9 syllables long (10 if you include "the"). "Team GB" and "Great Britain" have the same amount of syllables, so there isn't even the excuse of making a snappier sounding name. It really, really, really gets my goat.
I'm thinking of forming an alternative - "Team GRRRRR", for all the people who are fed up with, as David Mitchell put it, "capitalism's final victory".
If you want to join me, I'll be the one getting thrown out of Olympic venues for wearing a Pepsi t-shirt.
Ok, rant over. I will now return you to your scheduled viewing.
