Hi all - thought I'd start a beer thread.

Firstly, a little rant:

I went to a beer shop I've never been to before, in Preston. I bought twelve different ales back with me. Mostly, they cost around £2.10-£2.40 a bottle. This is no cheaper than the prices charged in the pub for a pint of real ale. I'm sick and tired of publicans moaning that beer is cheaper in the shop than it is in the pub! Not if you drink craft beer, it isn't. The last bottle of beer just drunk cost me £2.29 but it's a 500ml bottle. Convert the quantity of beer in the bottle from 500ml to 568ml and it costs £2.60 a pint. My local charges £2.60 a pint for real ale. See? No cheaper. And even if it is the same, pubs and shops offer two entirely different experiences anyway.

A golden pale ale. OK enough. Quite a spicy aftertaste too. Not bad.

Does Fuller's count as a craft beer? It compares favorably with most American small-batch breweries. Ommegang is a brewer from New York State who produces a significantly better product, but I can't think of another one, offhand. My last bottle of beer from them, about one liter, cost $13, which is very high, even by craft beer standards. Three Philosophers - 9.8% alcohol

You live in the United States. You have genuine craft beers coming out of your ears! Go explore them - there is far more diversity in the type of beers being produced in the US than in Britain.

I will say Michigan has some good brewers here such as Founders by Grand Rapids, MI. They make a nice Porter.


Also New Holland Brewery from Holland, MI makes some interesting brews. One of my favorites is a high gravity dark ale aged in oak barrels with notes of barley and vanilla.

I'm not much of a fan of beer, but I have discovered after being without for over 25 years, that Coors produces a red beer that has a decent flavor. Coors itself is dreadful stuff! The one I like is called Killian's Irish Red. Before that, just the smell of beer made me terribly sick to my stomach. I don't drink Killian's all that often, but it's pretty good...for a beer.

Well, being as I really don't like the smell or taste of most beers (because it turns my stomach immediately), it's as close as I will get. Thanks to a bloke who nearly killed me on the stuff. Never much cared for it before he got me sick either. I never said it was the best or better than anything else, merely that it's the only one I've found to be palatable. I'm more of a tea person, myself.
