Would a vile restaurant review deter you from going there?

I read reviews for a restaurant. 90% were good. I want to try the food there.

I read one review where the person found a finger nail in their food.

It makes sick to think about it and not sure I want to go any more. Am I overreacting?

Has the person's claim been verified by the Health Department?

If so, then I would never go there!

If not, then I might go, but I'd watch what I eat.

For me, usually the many outweigh the few when it comes to reviews. Plus, I'm not all that fussy when it comes to the food I eat, but some people can be really picky which may be the reason for a negative review. If I saw one that mentioned a finger nail, unless it was verified I wouldn't take it too seriously.

I am ridiculously funny about the cleanliness of the area where my food is prepared so any suggestion of unpleasantness, however minor, would normally be enough to put me off visiting a given restaurant. Even at "good" restaurants I am often unimpressed at the food. I concede this could be because I don't eat meat and it's a rare restaurant where they put any actual effort or thought into the vegetarian options.

I have to admit, something like that might drive me crazy; even if I couldn't confirm that it was true and the restaurant otherwise had glowing reviews. I'd bet that I wouldn't be able to stop thinking about it. Just me though...

I usually go by health department ratings, not food critic ratings.
But if I personally have a bad experience there I'm probably not going to give them a second chance.

Stuff like that also tends to put me off different restaurants.

If you really want to know a pub or restaurant, check the bathrooms at opening time.

If the management and crew care enough to keep it clean, dry, and well-stocked, then it's a fair cop to say that the kitchen is just as clean.

But if the sight (or the smell) of their bathroom ruins your appetite, you may want to find another place to eat.

A finger nail is a bit more disgusting than a snail shell that I found on my pizza. I picked it off and ate the pizza anyhow. But, this kind of thing can happened even in the best restaurants. All we can do is report this kind of stuff to management and hope management will do something about it. But, I would return to the restaurant if they served good food.

I even found a hair in my food at another restaurant that I use to go to regularly and I reported it. But, I continued to go there. It never happened again. I can think of things in restaurants as being worse and that is cockroaches crawling all over the place and rats.

I'm very picky about the type of food I eat but I'm not that picky about how it's prepared & I wait for hot food to cool off a while before eating it because I might burn my mouth when it's as hot as others like. I also don't pay attention to the decorative aspects(like how the atmosphere looks). I mostly care about the kind of food they serve, the amount of food I get for my money & how long will I have to wait to get it. Lots of restaurant revers are people who like fine-dinning; I'm the fast-food type; they focus on things I wouldn't. I would be more concerned with the review if it involves major health code violations like a band-aid in food or flypaper hung over the counter where trays of food get put

I'd only be turned off if most of the reviews were bad. If most of the reviews were good I'd still go to it. I try not to let other peoples opinions sway me.

One kind of review that I never read or listen to are movie reviews because I never agree with what they say.

Movie critics focus on things other than how entertaining it is

I'm my own restaurant critic, I've never even seen reviews of the places where I live. I'm often reluctant to try out new food places, especially if they're local and serve food I don't normally eat, like Greek food. My mother really likes Greek food but I find it's too full of greasy olive oil and it tastes "briny". I worry that local places don't follow the health rules as closely as franchise restaurants. I haven't had any really gross or nasty experiences but I wouldn't go to this one popular place for years because someone told me they got food poisoning there. I'm really afraid of any kind of food poisoning. I don't like buffets where they don't have sneeze guards and the food looks like it's been sitting for longer than it should. And it's not really the restaurant itself but I find it disturbing how many people are coughing like they have TB no matter what time of year it is! In spite of all this I usually go out for lunch with my mother about once a week.
