Hi,
This is a strange place to be asking travel advise but it's the only forum that I currently frequent so...Hubby is off to a conference in Vegas (baby), and as neither of us have been to the States before have decided to go to SF & LA too. We are from Melbourne, Aus.
Wanting to know the best areas to stay for a couple in their thirties who enjoy shopping (well, I do) and eating at restaurants and taking in the sights etc
We would prefer not to drive (it being on the wrong side of the road and all), so would need decent access to public transport.
We don't want to pay a fortune, it doesn't have to be modern and fancy, just clean and respectable.
Any ideas
TIA

TBH your best option to get around in LA is to hire a taxi. Buses are crowded, often late and some routes won't get you that close to your destination.
Metrolink is a wonderful commuter train that runs from San Diego and Orange counties as well as the Inland Empire. I live near Anaheim and have taken it to Union Station numerous times, unfortunately it doesn't reach the Bay Area with their Caltrain counterpart. Amtrak in theory has train service from LA to SF, sometimes they interrupt the line and use buses to shuttle to the next point
The transit system in the Bay Area is tenfold better than LA's at least. I quite enjoyed their BART
Shopping: I know in LA if you want clothes and shoes, Broadway between 6th and 16th streets is the Garment District, and if you like fruits and veggies, Alameda and Olympic is where the produce action is. Of course you can kill more birds with the same stone at the 3rd and Fairfax Farmers' Market
