Why does being a guy mean that I must be macho?

Surely I don't need to be macho just because I have a penis. That's nonsense.

Depends on how you define 'macho'.

I spent a good deal of my time in high school avoiding the guys who wanted to beat the daylights out of me because I wasn't as masculine as they were. I was in 'Theater Arts' class and played several parts in school plays. (One of which was Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'.) But I had problems dating girls, and I suppose I didn't swagger like they did. Somebody had labelled me a 'fa***t' and that meant I had a target on my back. But I didn't act feminine, or talk in that stereotypical lisping way. I was frightened quite often that I'd get my nose broken or somesuch injury. Which only contributed to the problem as I never got into a fight with any of them.

I can sympathise with you and Pretorius. On my two most recent jobs, I had male co-workers my age who were mostly kind of macho types. I had a very hard time getting along with most of them, or even maintaining conversation at all. They, in turn, disliked me for being 'weird and effeminate'. I managed to avoid much trouble by pretty much isolating myself from them except when we had to work together, so that I always kept the higher ground, so to speak. Since I was the one who dismissed THEM, I gave them no chance to dismiss ME. But they at least respected me for the good job I did.

I find macho guys to be a big turn off.

A person doesn't "have" to be anything.

I don't conform to the standard definitions of masculinity & had/possibly still have some gender issues because I'm not macho or masuline like guys are supposed to be.

WAAAAAAAAAY too much testosterone.

I've had masculinity issues myself. I look at myself in the mirror, and sometimes, I don't like what I see. However, I prefer not to let society and culture tell me what defines manliness.

My husband was a ballet dancer--not the most traditionally "macho" of pursuits.

But he has an amazing bod (not freakishly muscled but strong, lean and graceful) and does quite well in other manly areas too.
