One of my high school teachers told us to say "yes" rather than "yeah". It was so annoying.

I think it's good that teachers do that, because proper grammar is an indication of how polite you are.

Indeed, a significant factor in determining the sophistication of an individual is his or her proper and appropriate use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling; as well as an extensive measure of his or her vocabulary.

I think "yeah" has been in use long enough to be a legitimate word.

And then teachers wonder why some of their pupils drop off from school once they turn 18...

Yeah, it is.

I had a teacher that would say "don't say ain't because it isn't in the dictionary".

Well I never had the nerve to tell her but I had a dictionary at home with the word ain't in it and I ain't going to quit using it.

She also got mad when kids said lie-berry instead of library and got mad at me when we colored fall leaves and I colored one purple. I then brought a purple leaf in to show her that came from a tree right around the corner from the school.

Dear Fnord, 'Yeah' isn't classic 'Redneck'...
That would be 'Yup' or 'Ayup', or 'Yuhuh', actually.
Other than that, your well-phrased and nicely-spelled observation was quite correct.

Sylkat

In a few cases, we might add "Uh, ass right, yer honor."

Ain't is a word that should never be used.

Dear Fnord, Did you ever see a T.V. show called 'Memphis Belles'?
It is just the camera and microphone following around as three female Memphis cops go about their duties, like the show 'Cops', of course.
Anyhow, EVERY culprit, when caught, black or white, rich or poor, stoned or (moderately) sober, says the very same thing:

"But I ain't DID nothin'!"

I sort of want a t-shirt that says that......

I get cross at myself every time I say it. I've kind of taken it in from other people.

The very good teachers get tired of the pay, the hassles, the disinterested students, theunsupportive Board of Education, and find other fields.
