I've had an interest in them since I was in Kindergarten. :)

Any audio mixer can be plugged into amplifiers and cabinets to become a PA. I've done it with a 4- channel slider Radio Shack unit into a cheap boom box. Technically, a recording console is be nature a PA. while offering a bit more flexibility in routing signal to the musicians and engineer as well as sending design-zero'ed levels to tape or disc.
