I'm thinking about moving to New Mexico. I'm looking for year-round warmth, a slow pace of life, a low crime rate, and a smallish town, preferably in a rural area (but not a million miles away from town). Can anyone tell me about the state and suggest some nice places to live? There needs to be at halfway decent job market, as well. It doesn't have to be white-collar, but I won't to anything involving back-breaking labor or regular exposure to foreign chemicals.

Carlsbad is a nice, smallish town. My father-in-law lives there and I went to visit in 2006. It was really beautiful. I don't think it's warm there year 'round, though. They even got snow a couple of times even though it's desert. I don't know anything about the job market, though.
