Am I the only one here who thinks that people use the word "epic" way too much nowadays? "Epic" used to be a word that people used when they were describing old stories like The Epic of Gilgamesh or Odyssey but now people use the word "epic" in nearly every conceivable situation.

I know that George "Maddox" Ouzounian pointed this out before I did but I just keep agreeing with him more and more.

There is certainly an epic over-usage of it.

It's just an evolution of language; this generation's variant of "cool" or "awesome". I'm sure that when those words first began to be used as a synonym for really likable things there were complaints from people who thought they should be used only in their original context ("awesome" used to be used in a religious context, such as the song "Our God is an Awesome God"; whereas everyone knows what "cool"'s original meaning was)

Usage of the word "epic" doesn't seem as prevalent as it was a few years ago. Haven't seen it used frequently in quite some time, in fact.

this,

it seems single words as a fad are becoming less popular in favour of longer memes,

I think it was only among some people. I sort of am glad it is not being overused as much now.

Not too long ago there was a commercial which tag line was "Come in for an epic breakfast at McDonald's!" with the jingle playing afterwards. When McDonald's starts using that word, you know that it's overused.

Girugamesh! :P

I would imagine the geek crowd uses "epic" a lot because of Internet memes using "epic win" or "epic fail" a lot, but really, different social groups and different individuals tend to have their own overused words. Like, I use "awesome" a lot.

As others have said, I believe it's use is in decline. It could be just another passing trend like 'mish', or 'rank'.

I will use the word 'epic' to describe that style of narrative (i.e. "I like epic Chinese cinema), but did for a brief time use it incorrectly, as was the trend
