A random question for the random forum, but I was wondering about this today. The usual way around here is to use the right hand to bring food to the mouth with spoon or fork, but whenever something needs cutting the fork should go to the left one and the knife to the right one, but as people eat piece by piece instead of cutting it all first, it means that there will be a lot of switching around, which I deem as very inefficient. So I prefer just holding the knife in the left hand, so I can just bring the piece of meat to my mouth right after I cut it without fumbling around with cutlery. Anyone has similar experiences, or eats differently than it is the norm?

This fork-and-knife thing is a little different in America and Europe. North Americans especially seem to favor just the fork, while us Europeans shovel food into the mouth with the fork in the left hand, filling the fork with the knife. It's like an excavator and a bulldozer cooperating.

Fork in left hand, knife in right, cut bitesized piece, put knife down and lift fork to mouth still in left hand.

For things like rice where you would be using the fork like a spoon, it's okay to put it in your right hand.

But outside of very formal situations, people don't tend to mind how exactly you are doing it as long as you aren't being messy, silly or shovelling it in like you haven't eaten in weeks!

I don't pay attention just eat as fast as I can. I am left handed so put fork in left hand.

Cut all of one item into bite sized portions before starting eating. If I'm in a restaurant I'll cut a few bites worth and eat, as cutting everything at once seems a bit odd to some people, but generally I prefer to do all the cutting first and then eat uninterrupted.
