It's no fun losing a pet.

I myself am going to end up a crazy cat lady, but I do like dogs as well. :)

I mainly prefer cats but I also like dogs except for the toy/designer breeds.

I understand that mindset, having heard it from many people many times and once having felt that way myself. But I wanted to say that once we got a miniature mixed breed, all those feelings went out the window. The Chihuahua for instance is not a working dog, and not a Ratter as many think, but has only been bred, back since the Maya as a companion dog. If it is a companion pet you are looking for, it would be difficult to find better. The dogs have played a key role in my recovering from a very long lasting injury. These dogs have a large capacity for spending an inordinate time in direct company and interaction with people. In some situations that sort of constant companionship is just the right medicine. I have one Chihuahua-Toy Fox Terrier mix and another Chihuahua-Who Knows? mix (rescue).

But to the original topic... I have had or fostered both cats and dogs, and can get attached to both equally.

I love both. Right now I have three cats, and would like a dog, but they require more attention than I'm willing to give at this stage of my life. I love all kinds of animals, and would have a lot more pets if I had the time to care for them. The only kind of animal I don't like as a pet are birds. They're noisy and they seem to hate me. I think birds belong outside, in trees, not in cages. Although I think I'd like a pet chicken, if it lived outside in a coop.

Agreed on birds. I always feel so bad seeing birds stuck in those tiny cages. When I was younger and still lived in our original house we had pet chickens and they were awesome. We had them so tame that they would follow us around in the yard and you could pick them up and hold them whenever you wanted. They were hens so they also laid eggs every morning. We would go collect them every morning and those eggs were delicous. (large brown eggs) I really miss those chickens.

I prefer cats, mostly for practical reasons, but I do sometimes wish they were smarter.

I'm a dog man but I suppose the right cat would be okay to have.
My dog doesn't seem to have issues with cats.
