I searched my maternal great-grandfather's name on the Jewish page for ancestry.com, and his census form came up under Jewish records. If Ancestry is at all reliable, I guess that would mean that I have Jewish ancestry?

Has anybody ever experienced anything similar? Are the records on Ancestry reliable? I couldn't find out for sure since I don't have a membership.

Ancestry.com's data comes mainly from the LDS church. The church is quite reliable when it comes to genealogy.

I don't have a membership at the site, though. I come from an LDS family, so it was never helpful.

Oh, they're mormons... so that's why all the people in their commercials have that eerily-white vibe :P

ha! Actually, Ancestry.com is not run by the church. The church just happens to supply the most data that checks out.

I didn't know that. To be honest, we've been suspecting that my great-grandfather was Jewish for a while. When I saw that record on Ancestry, it pretty much confirmed my suspicions. My mom was very excited with the news, and even mentioned that we should buy a menorah and celebrate Hanukkah this year. :)

Sounds exciting. I'm not one for celebrating holidays, but I hope y'all have fun. :)

Still, the people on the ancestry.com commercials are freaky-white. I mean, they're so white they make me uncomfortable, and I'm white! Hell, I even just went to "stuff white people like", and found this:

OMG, the the 6th guy from the left looks so much like me it's scary - all the way down to the "man-purse" What does it mean?

Back to the OP, I had a similar experience, I am adopted, but I was able to find out the surnames of my biological parents on the Internet. My mother's surname was "Davidson", which of course is a common Jewish surname. I thought it was pretty cool, maybe it explains my talent for business.

Davidson is also a Scottish clan.

It's one of the clans my family comes from.

Congrats Descartes! I do too. :D

I don't use Ancestry.com that much because I enjoy researching on my own so, I can't really say. I did find one man on there who is a distant relative who had some details about some of my family members wrong. I think someone in his family had the wrong information about them and he had just entered what they had without checking it out.

Dang, I'm from Portland. Thankfully I don't look like any of them.

I don't fit any of the stereotypes in that picture.

My last name is Scottish, too, although my parents insist that our ancestors are Irish. I also know that my ancestors are English and French. So, to my knowledge, my heritage is made up of English, Irish, French, and Jewish ancestry.
