Anyone else like persimmons? Today I got some dried persimmons from my Asian market. I was pretty used to fresh ones, and fresh ones are my second favorite fruit after lychees, but dried ones are out of this world, wow. It's rare a dried fruit is better than fresh, but wow. I've never had a hachiya persimmon, though, all the ones I tried were too ripe and when persimmons are ripe enough to be soft and juicy, they taste nasty to me.

I love persimmons. Ripe hachiya persimmons are amazing when they are semi frozen. They taste like sorbet.

Hello.

I actually don't really like persimmons, but I'm posting here because I love talking about fruits in general. Persimmons always remind me of my grandfather. There was a persimmon tree at his house. Even now my mum tells me how heavenly the fruits from that tree tasted. Unfortunately the tree got removed when the house was rebuilt after my grandfather's death.

Persimmon trees sometimes get some nasty colorful hairy caterpillars. Their hairs have some poison. I don't think they affect the fruits, though.

Sorry for being a bit off the OP's topic.

It's funny you should make this topic, because I was talking with someone about them earlier today! I hadn't even heard of them before today even lol, but now I want to try one! They don't have them at the grocery stores here so I think I'm out of luck for a while.

They're only in season fresh from fall to early winter. Now you're out of luck. The easiest way for me to describe the taste is like a really sweet less juicy melon with a hint of spiciness to it. It's great.

They're pretty tasty, but not very easy to come across.

They look beautiful on the trees, as if they have been transported from a fairy tale.
I've always meant to try one, and your post has reminded me to.

They grow wild here, harvest after frost.I've planted an Asian one and it even had two giant persimmons the second year.Plus the fall color is awesome.I have lots of recipes for the strained pulp.Cookies, cakes, pies, fresh, dried,it's all good. They are drought tolerant, disease free and pest resistant.Except for raccoons and possums.Every homegardner should plant one.I've had alcoholic beverages made from them also.
People around here say that someone with a nasty attitude is "sourer than a green persimmon."
And from an old bluegrass tune,

"Possum in the simmon tree,
Rabbit on the ground,
Rabbit says You son of a b*@-h
Shake them simmons down."

My mom (who was born/raised in Japan BTW), loves persimmons. She planted a fuyu persimmon tree in the backyard about 20-30 years ago, and now it's at least 30 feet tall.

The hachiya are too brackish for my taste, but the fuyu are good even if a little bit slimy.
