If you are still referring to 'turnings', as in your OP, the "rainbow" effect
is caused by the heat of friction, from the cutting action of the mill or lathe. I've used both, and have seen this many times, usually caused by using a dull cutting tool, improper cutting angle, or when trying to cut an excessively hard material.
