I only visited it once and did not like it one bit. Too much traffic, too much smog and too many people-many of whom are environmentalists. Not to mention the taxes are too high, real estate is too expensive and they have the most evil, draconian smog inspections in the history of mankind. Plus, they are nowhere near liberal enough on gun ownership. The only good side is the dry weather that seems to preserve old cars for a long time, making them ripe for export to other, nicer parts of the country.
I am not saying that where I live (Central Florida) is all that great either. It's too hot and there is no real industry outside of healthcare, agriculture and tourism. Plus, the landscape is boring and too many of the people are uneducated. However, the lax gun laws and total lack of any form of automotive inspections keep me here. I feel much safer knowing that almost anywhere I go someone is likely carrying a concealed handgun.
They are some of the laziest environ
mentalists on the planet; If they were putting their money where their mouths are that traffic would be reduced by at least a third. The rest of the traffic and smog problem would see a dent if the illegal aliens were held to the same standard as legal citizens; from the driving patterns I observe people driving illegally are on a similar plane as old vision impaired drivers, and those cars are all too often running dirty engines that need to be taken off the road. You know there's a problem when a modern fuel-injected, computer controlled 4-stroke engine channeling exhaust into a catalytic converter is emitting 3 times the smoke as a 30 year old 2-cycle engine burning out the remains of previous lower quality oils, along with built up gum and varnish.
The policy makers do most of their thinking with their heads in a warm, dark place. The smog laws are one reason among many that I choose 2-wheeled transportation. My goal has been to find a completely street legal 2-stroke motorcycle capable of handling freeways, there are a very few that slipped through the cracks, I may be a little closer to reaching that goal. It's little things like this that make me glad not to be a blind sheep.
The auto export business is huge here; I live a mile away from a terminal where the lot is overflowing with anything on wheels destined for Sweden where the cars get through about 3 winters before the floor pans rust out. I had a neighbor who borrowed a trailer from his friend to get a $200 car from Craigslist. While the car sat on the trailer the friend bought the car for $1000. He sold it to someone at the terminal for $5000, and by the time it reached Sweden it fetched $20,000, and it was in a completely unrestored state!
Along with this their buddies put in on group buys from the Summit Racing and Jeg's catalogs, then they stuff as much into each car as they can before it goes on the container
