Why do people say that a guy having an extra y chromosome makes him a criminal? The extra y chromosome doesn't do anything.

I was never able to figure that out. I don't think that an extra y chromosome did anything.

Q: "Why do people say that a guy having an extra y chromosome makes him a criminal?"

A: XYY syndrome is a rare chromosomal disorder that affects only males. It is caused by the presence of an extra Y chromosome. Males normally have one X and one Y chromosome. However, individuals with this syndrome have one X and two Y chromosomes. Affected individuals are usually very tall. Many experience severe acne during adolescence. Additional symptoms may include learning disabilities and behavioral problems such as impulsivity. Intelligence is usually in the normal range, although IQ is on average 10-15 points lower than siblings.

The best studies of XYY males indicate that they are more prone to aggressive behavior than XY males. XYY men (sometimes called "supermales") have been of interest to psychologists and criminologists because of the correlation that these males are more aggressive and more prone to violence than males with a single Y chromosome. When evaluated by a battery of psychological tests, XYY males do exhibit more aggressive behaviors than XY males.

Generally, people with learning disabilities, impulsivity, and a tendency toward violent behavior tend make poor choices, especially with regard to assault and petty crimes. It is not so much that XYY Syndrome makes a person a criminal, but that people with XYY Syndrome tend to be over-represented in criminal populations, especially in prisons.

Looks like you answered your own question...

And still I don't think it means they are all criminals, but I could see people with more aggression being more likely to fall into criminal behavior of the more violent nature.

Wikipedia however says

Quote:
Aggression is not seen more frequently in 47,XYY males.

For a time, it was alleged that men with extra "Y" Chromosomes had "criminal tendencies." That has been debunked.

Where I come from it's a euphemism for having Down Syndrome. I don't understand how it could be interpreted otherwise. It's a cruel thing to say, I've known several people with Down Syndrome and it's not a uniform thing.

Did you know that higher IQ DS sufferers make fun of lower IQ DS sufferers similar to the way non-sufferers make fun of all Down Syndrome patients? The average DS IQ is 50, which makes me wonder what the rare ~200 IQ person thinks of us average 100 IQ folks... From Wikipedia:

Down syndrome (DS or DNS), also known as trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21.

Until the 1970s, Down Syndrome was usually called "Mongolism."

My little cousin who isn't born yet may have Down Syndrome. My mom may offer to take the baby if my aunt decides she doesn't want it.

Having Down Syndrome and having an extra Y chromosome are not the same thing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XYY_syndrome

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_syndrome

Down syndrome affects males and females, while obviously XYY syndrome can only affect males. Down syndrome is due to an extra copy of chromosome 21, not an extra Y chromosome. If it were due to an extra Y chromesome, there would be no females with Down syndrome.

I know, but I just heard and other people were talking about it^^^^^

I think I know someone with XYY syndrome, if that is relevant.

:D

He's quite nice, to be honest. He was in my gym class last year. He can be "violent", but mainly only when he doesn't know what is going on (like when the schedule changes). I'm not sure if it is XYY, but it certainly seems that way.

Do you know what his diagnosis is?

People with XYY sometimes don't even known they are XYY.....and others don't know, too.

No, I don't know exactly what condition it is. He is very tall, flaps his hands, rocks back and forth, etc. It seems to be a genetic condition though. He is a nice kid, so I don't know what the violence thing is about.
