Why do doorbells in movies always buzz? Instead of going "ding dong". Is it to avoid confusion with a real doorbell?

They do not always buzz. The doorbells in Star Trek movies (and the series') tweedled and chirped. The ones in the Adams Family and Munters series used animal noises, foghorns, shrieks and other sound effects.

Many times, there is no doorbell at all - people just knock.

Some people don't have doorbells that go ding dong. Some doorbells do actually buzz, and are called "buzzers."

You are more likely to have a buzzer if you live in an apartment or a flat, and you are more likely to have a ding dong doorbell if you live in a house. At least, that's the impression I get, but maybe I'm wrong. The ones that buzz rather than going ding dong are normally part of a security system with an intercom, that allows you to talk to a visitor arriving outside and decide whether or not you allow them entry to your gated apartment complex.

I remember that on Tiny Toon Adventures, Montana Max's doorbell said either "Money" or "Monty". Can't seem to recall which one, however.......

Hmm, I've never noticed, and I can't think of a film where they work a doorbell at the moment, but next time I watch a film what mostly involves people in a house, I will pay closer attention and see what sound the doorbell makes.

A lot of doorbells on TV shows sound like my real doorbell and if it rings on TV the dumb dogs go berserk.

I need to get a doorbell because I can never tell if someone is knocking on my door or my neighbour's (our doors are only a few feet apart).

When we moved in to my current flat we had a doorbell that buzzed. It wasn't working reliably so we also put in a wireless one that rings.

Could be caused by this (although the prominence of buzzers has been called into question in this thread):
