Why are people attracted to patterns?

Hi,

Does anyone know why we as species seem to be so attracted to patterns?

It seems to me that we are a pattern seeking and pattern creating species, whether we're admiring it in the wings of a butterfly, creating symmetry in bulidings or decorating our homes with patterned wallpaper.

Is there a biological reason, or is it psychological - creating order out of choas? Or a bit of both?

And may I ask the same question of lights? A lot of people seem to be fascinated by certain kinds of light.
