Just wondering. It's been speculated her sister Emily had it, as she was a recluse who withdrew into her own imagination and had no need for friends. But several readers have read Charlotte Bronte's novel Villette and speculated that the heroine, Lucy Snowe, is mildly autistic. What do you think?

I think that it is pure speculation, simply because we can't know whether or not a person who lived and died 90 years before AS was even identified actually had AS.

That "Jane Eyre" was something of a "coming-of-age" story -- a sensitive person goes in search of answers to life's imposing questions with the expectation that finding the answers will result in gaining experience of the world -- was somewhat typical of Victorian Age literature.

Was Charlotte Bronte a literary genius? That may be debatable, depending on your tastes in literature.

Wad Charlotte Bronte an Aspie? We may never know.
