I need some advice about dying my hair. My Mum says it's not safe to do it all the time.

Now, I like to wait at LEAST 2 weeks between dying it. Thing is, if I try to wait longer, then it'll wash out and fade even more and make my hair look like a dirty mess. I COULD wash less often, but my hair gets greasy a LOT, so I HAVE to wash it more. Not to metion me wanting to wash the rest of my body as well.

So I want to know, how often is safe nough to dye my hair? Also, if I really can't wait, is it safe for me to put only a thin layer of dye on, as if renewing it?

I use semi-permanent dye, by the way.

I'm told (by my wife) that even a henna rinse can damage hair if done more than once every two weeks.

When your mum says, "It's not safe", she likely means that it could damage your hair by making it brittle enough to fall out in clumps.

It would be a good idea to ask a beautician. My daughter will be graduating from Paul Mitchell this summer,I'll ask her next time I talk to her, most likely tomorrow. She does color parts of her hair and she is specializing in color. It may depend on your hair type,if it's thin and dry maybe not so often.

If you are using anything with bleach my daughter said that is really hard on the hair, even chlorine in pools is bad for color treated hair. And heat like blow dryers is really harsh on color treated hair.As how often it's safe, depends on your hair type and the product.

Have you thought about using permanent dye? Then it doesn't fade so much, so you only need to do it every month or so, to touch up the roots. That won't work so well if you like changing your colour regularly though.

As Misslizard says, you should definitely be gentle with dyed hair, and not use heat on it very often.

Otherwise, I think your mum is right, I wouldn't advise colouring too often, it can be pretty harsh on your hair. I don't think using a 'thin layer' would really make much difference. It would be hard to be consistent, but even so, you are still applying it to your hair, so the damage is still being done.

My youngest daughter (17) dyes her hair about once a month. By that, I don't mean she touches up the roots of her existing color. I mean she switches colors drastically. She's gone from bright red to green to black to blonde to pink to blue within about six months. Sometimes this involves bleaching out the dye, other times it just means dying over it, or in the case of some of the colors like Splat it means using oil to pull the color out before bleaching and then redying it. Her hair is pretty much ok otherwise. She washes it every day and straightens it. She always uses permenant color as well and also the better brands and not the cheap Clairol crap I use on mine.

Tell me what you used and what your natural color is and what you have in mind to do and I'll ask her and then she can tell you what to get.
