Why is it that people send flowers when someone dies, when a baby is born, for Valentine's day and for Mother's day???

I just don't get it!
Why would they take perfectly lovely flowers and kill them, put them in an arrangement with other dead flowers and then send them all off to someone?
And then on top of all of that... a lot of people (like me) are allergic to pollen.
Not to be ungrateful- but geesh- don't send me flowers!! !!

Someone sent us a bunch of flowers yesterday- and my sinuses have been suffering since. My nose has been stuffy all day and now I have a headache. I've even gotten to the point of hearing high pitched noises in my ear that no one else hears. I don't want to be spaced out on sinus medication all day/all night in my own house. Why not send us something that we can use? No, they have to send us dead flowers that smell up the place.

I don't know. Symbolic perhaps?

I'd rather recieve a second-hand Routemaster from an antique mall, than a boquet of flowers.

It's a sign of friendship in most cases.

or the way that I did it for one of my friends....

as a reminder that she is not forgotten and taht she is appreciated on valentines day.

I find that with most flowers too, the pollen gives me sinusitis. Carnations are OK, they don't have much scent. I'd rather have a green leafy non-flowering plant than flowers, at least it's alive too.

I sent mine (Starbuline, yay!) a CD with my favourite music on it. Most lovers get the flowers mentioned, or maybe some chocolates. I sent mine a friggin' album! :D

The flowers are finally gone!! !
Hubby took them to his Aunt's place. She'll like the flowers and she deserves them a lot more than we do. :D :D :D
I hope my sinuses clear up and that the high pitched noises in my ear stop soon. They were driving me crazy!!

i like receiving flowers.

1. they are lovely.

2. they don't last which means i don't have to find a prominent place to display them FOREVER in case the giver ever comes to my house.

3. because they have a shelf life, this means there can be no strings attached to the gift. unlike the vacuum cleaner an ex gave me once. ( i DID use it everyday, but he tracked dirt in everyday so when he bothered to look at the floor he was only seeing his own mess which he then blamed me for not using his gift to me).

I like flowers as long as they are potted and I can plant them later in the spring.

Cut flowers to me are such a waste.

But I can definately see your point sun_rat...especially if someone has really bad taste in gifts.

Another >8-year-old thread!

I personally prefer fruits (or cookies, money, some quality gift food collection etc) as a gift. You can't even eat flowers. Flowers are boring. Flowers also seem to be emotional and dramatic rather than practical, which also puts me off somehow. I do like flowers but not as a gift. I like flowers that have roots and are still alive.
