Because WrongPlanet does not have server space or bandwidth to host images itself. The only images it hosts are avatars. I'm not aware of any forums that host images directly due to the huge cost overheads.

PlayStation forums are one example I can think of, but they're rich enough to do that xD

Also, it's simply more efficient to post links to content instead of duplicating that same content all over the place.

I was just going to say that The Playstation forums can, in fact I posted a couple just an hour ago.

I wish we could here because I would probably post pics a lot more often if we were able to. But no, we need to take a picture, upload it to another site, and then copy the link to it and paste it here. Always wastes like 10 minutes for me.

Sites like Photobucket, Imgur, TinyPic, ImageShack and many others exist because posting links to a central repository is cheaper, more secure and more efficient than physically shovelling the same content out all over the net - or worse, allowing the net to directly access it on your PC (which is likely prohibited by the AUP/ToS of your ISP anyway).
This is also a fundamental component of how the WWW operates so it's nothing weird or unusual.

The PlayStation forum is a proprietary minority and as Wind pointed out, Sony can afford it - although somewhat curiously, I find this:

I really do understand. I am not as insensitive as I seem. I just get frustrated because I want to share things like others do with images but I just cannot figure out how it is done, even with all the explanations. All this technical stuff makes my eyeballs fog up.

The corgi is terrified of the iguana, when I bring her into the living room he runs and hides. She popped him with her tail once. He's had respect for her ever since. :D I've got other reptiles and animals. The majority are rescue animals.
